I spent my first year after my injury in a nursing home facility, then two years in an apartment, and now rent a lovely house with my boys. I did have a 1995 wheelchair van in which people could drive me to doctors’ appointments, errands, social events, and exercise therapy. Unfortunately, the van is no longer running or able to be fixed. It’s very important for me to get active again!
I am working with vocational rehab to reenter the workforce and I’m excited to contribute to society again and have a purpose to my days. I recently had a driver evaluation and drove for the first time from my chair (with specialized hand controls). Wow!! What an experience and feeling of independence! My goal is to have a vehicle to allow me to be employed, attend and serve in my church, Northview, participate in social events, go shopping, try some adaptive sports, travel, and go workout at Neurohope exercise therapy gym (just for spinal cord injuries)…. so many opportunities!
In a few years my boys will be off to college and then living lives on their own. I want to be able to go visit them also. Having a new van and driving will give me the independence I am craving so that I can lead a more fulfilling life! The possibilities are exciting! Being paralyzed is not the end it’s just the beginning of living differently. Please make a donation and encourage others to GIVE by sharing this page on your social media platforms.
I’ve posted several pictures prior to my injury showing how active my life had been and several after showing how active I can be with a van when someone else is driving. I know there’s so much more to come when I’m able to drive myself! Let the adventures begin!
I have chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for donors. Donors can be sure that funds donated will be used only to pay or reimburse expenses related to my continued recovery. Thank you so much for your support!
With Much Gratitude,
Amy
