Judy grew up in the Pasco County, Florida hamlet of Darby and graduated from Pasco High in nearby Dade City. Many remember her from her advertising sales job at The Tampa Tribune, or from her time as executive director of the Dade City Chamber of Commerce.
Judy long believed she could not have children, as surgical removal of an ovary was necessary at age 21. However, two miracles occurred in her late 30s: she met the love of her life, Paul Dutrow, and gave birth to their beautiful, healthy daughter, Erica Ray Dutrow. The active family enjoyed travel, boating, deep-sea fishing and diving.
For 16 years, she and Paul owned and operated a successful specialty construction business. Then the recession. The tightknit family is hopeful necessary financial assistance will help see them through the lifesaving lung transplant.
Judy’s symptoms began with shortness of breath, making exercise and other everyday activities difficult. She tires easily. Diagnosed with progressive lung disease, she began breathing treatments and inhalants. In 2007, she was put on oxygen therapy, making it impossible to maintain a normal lifestyle. She even was forced to discontinue her involvement with Erica’s school activities. Today, she is on oxygen 24 hours daily, tethered by a breathing tube to a machine.
That dependency makes it extremely impractical to leave the house for anything but critically important medical appointments. The continual lack of breath spawns additional anxiety. The resulting inactivity led to a weight gain, but Judy recently lost 38 pounds to prepare for her transplant.
Insurance copays, other extremely high out-of-pocket expenses, including post-transplant lab fees and medication, make outside assistance critical.
To help with the financial burden of Judy’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with HelpHOPEive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southeast Region Lung Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider a contribution.
Want to send out a great big 'thank you' for the generosity of Rebecca Jennings, Crystal Brooks, Tom Peterson, Heather Roach, and two sweet and thoughtful Anonymous Donors. My love and gratitude go out to you tenfold.
Thank you, Rosemary & Kenneth Culp, Alicia & Charlie Thomas, Jay Brown, Daniel Berger, Elizabeth, Michael & Kevin Cox and Diane Polson for your recent donations. Your kindness and support will not be forgotten. Thank you.
I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about my fund raising committee because they are amazing.
The group is headed up by our superstar, Brenda Minton. I have known and loved Brenda, and her daughter, Sara, for many years but it's her work experience with Tampa Tribune, Dade City Chamber of Commerce and many other organizations that make this all second nature for her. For instance, you know that wonderful Nighttime Christmas Parade we all love? That's Brenda's work, but there is so much more she has done for our community.
Dennis Devine and his wife Maggie both bring organizational skills and creativity to the group. If you have not heard Dennis perform in at least one of his groups, you may be living under a rock and missed a lot of fun. We will try to fix that for you. Maggie has organized events at Jack's Pottery in San Ann for years and is currently working on the Tampa Bay Tour D Clay with sales and viewing on Dec. 13 & 14. Don't miss it! Both Maggie and Jack do outstanding work.
Bill Sargent, photographer, and his wife, Anne have done all of the photographs for this campaign and will continue to do so if I am that lucky!
Debi Alexander, who is my sista, and can pick up details that sometimes creative types would rather ignore, but we can't do it without them.
Jim Pavek, from San Antonio, put that small burg on the map with his Darby Road Race. While he has been involved in many, many other events, The Darby is still today one of the reasons people enjoy our outstanding area for bicycling.
Two more long time Tampa Tribune employees, George Wilkinson, and Carol Hedman are skilled writers and editors. Carol is also an expert layout and design specialist. Both of these two probably wish I would have let them edit this down to fewer words and corrected my spelling. Oh well!
Finally, there is my adorable husband, Paul, and protective brother, Sam Hinson. They are here because they love me and I love them more.
Thank you to some of the greatest people I know.
Judy
Thank you David Bellamy, Nina Sturwold, Janis Danowitz, Erika Remsberg and Rita Wilcher for your donations. It warms my heart to see such kindness from all of my donors.
Thank you Andrew & Jessica Enyart, Marty Menane, Robin Edwards, Jim Pavek, Vicki Church, Brenda Minton, Sandra Reed, Janis Danowitz, Dennis Devine & Judith Price for your kind and generous donations. You have no idea what this means to me. If you haven't already, please sign the guest book.
This entire experience has been filled with laughter, sadness, joy, fear, but mostly love. Funny how that worked out because love is what has kept me going.
From my husband Paul's constant care, to my daughter Erica's knack of making me laugh, and to all my family and friends who are always there.
This fundrasing campaign has come together because some of the greatest people in Dade City and San Antonio put it together. I'll be telling you more about them in later updates.
It is humbling asking for help. For those of you that have helped with this campaign now and in the future, and for those of you who chose to donate, I can never express how grateful I am for you.

My Erica Ray,
Thank you for such a sweet post. You are such a wonderful daughter. However, in the back of your mind you must be worrying about the Pet Scan. It did not show cancer the first time and it will not show it again, but that is the word you used in your post. There is nothing to be afraid of, sweetheart. We have each other, a great facility, Tampa General, loving and caring friends, and hopefully this Campaign will help with costs not paid by insurance. Things could not get better. To the Moon and back, Momma.
Judy
Oh my beautiful momma. Words do not really express the way I feel about you and what you deal with on a daily basis. I can only imagine. I complain almost everyday about the simple things in life. All the while, you are battling something real. Not a day goes by that I dont think about what a strong, loving women you are. Your so beautiful inside and out, please know this. And for you to work this hard at kicking this cancer in the butt I finally can feel safe. For once I'm not scared. This is not a sad time by any means and when you hear me cry its not because I'm sad, its because I love you so much. And Im am SO FREAKINN PROUD OF YOU!!!!!!
