Three years ago, at the age of young age of 35, my loving husband, Stas Wisniewski’s life was changed forever. Recovering from foot surgery, he developed an infection which went sepsis causing several strokes and a lesion on his spine. He was placed on life support and we were told that he may not make it and a decision had to be made either to let him pass or somehow recover. He was asked Stas “Do you want to live”? Blink once for no and blink twice for yes. Stas blinked twice.
Since then, we have relocated to North Carolina to be closer to his family and get Stas the support, care and therapy that he desperately needs. Stas is unable to walk and has limited use of his arms and hands, and is completely dependent for all of his activities of daily living.
While Stas has made remarkable progress he still has a long road of recovery ahead of him. His greatest need right now is additional therapy in hopes of gaining more movement. Stas does have health insurance, but not all of his medical expenses are covered and a significant amount must be paid out of pocket. Some of these are rehabilitation therapy, home health care, and his doctor’s visits and medications. In spite of the daily struggles he faces, Stas remains confident and hopeful that he will be able to walk again and gain some of his independence. He would love to be able to ride his motorcycle and go fishing, which were two of his favorite thing to do.
A fundraising campaign in Stas’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, and held by HelpHOPELive in the South Atlantic Catastrophic Illness Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for injury-related expenses only. Please consider a contribution.
If you’d like to volunteer to help with fundraising, please contact me. On behalf of Stas and our family, thank you for your kindness, generosity, support and prayers.
