Derek Avillanoza is a 54 year-old man with end stage renal disease. His kidneys failed 3 ½ years ago and since then Derek has been completely dependent on dialysis treatments 3 days a week. Dialysis is a life sustaining procedure but Derek’s only chance to return to good health is a kidney transplant. There are not many transplant centers in California, and there are long lists of people waiting to receive a kidney. The wait for a deceased donor can be 8-10 years in the Los Angeles area. Unfortunately many people do not receive one, because they body undergoes much stress with dialysis, and complications can result.
Derek was very lucky to meet his wife, Lee, whom he calls his “angel from above.” Not only is he blessed to have her in his life, but after many months of medical testing it was determined that Lee was a match, a compatible donor, and able to give him one of her kidneys!
A transplant date has been set, but the cost of a transplant can be overwhelming. Funding this life-saving procedure is a monumental task, as there will be many medical expenses not completely covered by insurance. High co-pays for some of the immune suppression medications, annual deductibles, travel expenses from Lompoc, CA to Sacramento, CA and aftercare lodging are just part of the expenses they will incur. The cost of just one medication is estimated at $569 per month!
Derek was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, but has lived in the Lompoc community for over 40 years. He worked at Raytheon in Santa Barbara, and for the Dept. of Justice in Lompoc. He medically retired in 2013 due to complications with his diabetes, and kidney failure. Together, Derek, Lee and their families are committed to seeing him through this transplant process. He is looking forward to many years to come with his grandchildren!
To help with the financial burden of Derek’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in his honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southwest Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Thank you for your support and generosity,
The family of Derek and Lee, derekavillanoza@comcast.net
Derek received his transplant in February after he and his wife participated in a kidney swap with another couple. They used HelpHOPELive funds to cover the cost of their temporary relocation, travel and lodging pre- and post-transplant.
As many of you know, I was scheduled for a kidney transplant in early November, when I was to receive a kidney from Cindy. We had a setback on Friday, Nov. 7; we were told by the "UC-Davis" transplant center that our operation for Nov. 10 has been canceled, due too my body developing "Anti-bodies". We did our final "Blood" work on Thursday, Nov. 6th, where they actually mixed our blood together, and the results indicated that my body would reject my wife's kidney. Why they would tell me this, at the "11th hour" is beyond me. Needless to say, we are very devastated. I will stay on the "Cadaver List" and hope for a match. Cindy and I are also considering, to be put on the "Swap/Pairing" list. I will keep you posted. Mahalo Derek

Hi Derek,
My son Derrick Grimm is on here.
I was looking up random pages on this site to see what other people’s pages looked like.
How are you doing? Were you able to to have the transplant?
Warmly,

Hi Derek--The organization that you may want to look into is called Hope4Lives. I am not sure how far-reaching they go in helping others. I will meet with them at a race on November 1st for Cassidy's Army. I can ask them questions then.
Love you,
Doreen Dodge
Hi Derek--My husband George runs in a lot of 5Ks which have been organized by non-profit organizations. You may want to look into that as a yearly event to assist people with transplants.
