Help Debbie Get Her New Heart!
Debbie Mortl, or “Mamaw” to her grandchildren, is a 53-year-old woman who was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy in 1997. She’s battled through congestive heart failure, an ICD implant, and an LVAD in attempts to keep her heart functioning; a heart transplant is her only hope for survival. Transplants are life-saving but very expensive, and she needs our help.
Debbie’s been involved in her community in various ways, usually displaying her knack for cooking and coming up with her own soups and tasty treats as well as old family favorites, always trying to keep family history and traditions alive. She’s “Mamaw” to not only her two grandchildren, but to her oldest son’s niece and nephews as well, and they can always expect a little treat from Mamaw when she comes to visit. She sings Alto in the Church Choir, and she looks forward to every performance to “Make a joyful noise to the Lord,” as she’ll always say.
In 2012, she reunited with her birth father after 40 years, meeting her brother and sister and stepmom for the first time. During her LVAD surgery, her newly-expanded family never left her side as she spent weeks in recovery. Together with the Lord, as she walks through the troubled waters of cardiomyopathy, her family and her Savior will never leave her side as she awaits her transplant and the new lease on life that new heart will give her.
After so many years of serving and helping others, Debbie is the one who now needs our help. Transplants save lives, but their costs can be extremely overwhelming and financially draining. Even with insurance there are many out-of-pocket expenses with the 30 days of pre-transplant testing, procurement of the heart from the donor, transplantation, 180-day Post-Transplant admission and copays and cost share from insurance. Post-transplant medications that she will take for the rest of her life can be more than $1000 per month.
To help with the financial burden of Debbie’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the North-Central Heart Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider a contribution; every donation helps.
Thank you so much for your prayerful consideration, kind words, thoughts and your prayers for Debbie.
Sincerely Yours in Christ,
Eric Mortl, Debbie’s son, on behalf of her family
