In Spring 2014, Doug had a lung infection which sparked a new round of tests and the results were sent to the lung transplant team at Tampa General Hospital. At his October appointment at Tampa General, Doug was informed that he was a good transplant candidate. Doug knows he is in good hands and is joyful for all the small miracles that have happened. He is excited about his future ability to feel well again and to be able to function at full capacity; the rest of us are wondering if we will be able to keep up with him!
To help with this financial burden, a fundraising campaign in Doug’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southeast Lung Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider making an end-of-year tax-deductible donation today by clicking the DONATE NOW bar.
We thank you for your prayers and concerns regarding our financial needs. Your donation will be greatly appreciated.
The Family of Doug Petrie
But now, this is what the Lord says—
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior
—Isaiah 43: 1-3
It's been three years since Doug was diagnosed with IPF and over a year since he has had his lung transplant. We now see the doctor every three months. We still stay in touch with the medical team via phone but we don't do as many trips to Tampa. God has richly blessed us with healing for Doug, great families and friends who support us, and many folks, known and unknown, who have prayed for Doug. The Bible speaks of God's peace that is beyond human understanding, well I may not be able to explain it, but I have experienced it ... when I was by myself in the waiting room while Doug was in surgery, driving home at 2 am after his operation, and numerous other times, and it's all because of the prayers of God's people. Thank you for your financial support, your love and prayers.
Happy Anniversary to Doug!
It's been a year since his lung transplant. We are forever grateful to the donor and family. Thank you to the folks at Tampa General Hospital and HelpHopeLive.
June 2016
In May Doug had surgery to reverse the colostomy and everything went well until he contracted c. diff. in the hospital. I am grateful it was discovered at the hospital and not after we had brought him home. This surgery will take away the chance for skin infections that could lead to other complications.
What a way to start the new year! Five months ago today Douglas left Tampa General Hospital after having a lung transplant. The doctors and staff at TGH have been keeping a constant eye one him and we are grateful to say that Doug has no signs of rejection. To those of you who have contributed towards Doug's medical costs we say a big thank you; you are helping to keep him alive. All good things from from Thee, O God (I Chronicles 29:14b).
At the 4th month out from transplant, Doug is doing well. We are grateful to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Tampa General Hospital for all their good care and the training they gave us. Thank you to the staff at HelpHOPELive.com; you really do have our backs. Thank you to all who have donated. And thank you for all your prayers and support.
Had the first of 8 weekly visits yesterday and all is going well.
On August 16 we got the call from Tampa General Hospital. Doug had a lung transplanted late that evening. He had several days in ICU but they had him sitting up and walking very quickly. Now on August 26 he is going home. He will have clinics every week for three months and they will be balancing his medications during this time. Thank you to all who have donated because of you we will be able to pay for these life saving medications.
Well, last Thursday, June 11, we had a trial run to Tampa General. Doug was called early afternoon and we were at the hospital by 3:30pm. Doug was prepped for the transplant while we waited. Around 10pm we found out the donated lungs were not suitable. We are very grateful to the staff of Tampa General Hospital and the lung transplant team for taking very good care of us.
Thank you to all who have donated toward Doug's medical costs. As of May 28, 2015 he is officially on the list for a lung transplant. We have been blessed by your concern for our finances. Please keep praying for health, healing, and grace under pressure.
May 5, we head to Tampa General Hospital so the doctors can take a look at Doug and they can update some test. Through the generous gifts of friends and family we have hit our first goal which gave us the financial release to proceed with the surgery. We are hoping for good news next week. Thank you for your love and prayers. We are learning to rest in God's peace.
Thank you everyone. In one month you have contributed just over $2,000.00 towards Douglas' medical expenses only $8,000.00 more to go.
On December 11, we received a call from Tampa General telling us that the transplant committee had met and approved Doug for his lung transplant. He has a couple of medical procedures that need to be done and several thousand dollars to raise before the surgery.
