In October of 2013, while undergoing open heart surgery, Gaile DeTellem suffered a life changing spinal cord injury which left her paralyzed from the waist down. After many serious complications and more than seven months in the hospital, in June of 2014 Gaile finally realized her dream of returning to her home. She is managing at home quite well, considering that she has lost the ability to move her lower limbs. She requires private pay help both morning and night for getting in and out of bed, dressing, and daily house and yard work.

Gaile has always been fiercely independent and desperately wants to live on her own for as long as possible. This incredible quality has served her well through all of these struggles but as you might imagine expenses for private care are high. If you asked Gaile the one thing that would help her through all of these life changing times would be if she could have a vehicle that she could drive or be driven in. At the moment the only way she can get transported is either through her local community senior services transport which allows her only two transports a month or by renting a wheelchair accessible van which is extremely expensive.

Hello Everyone…..quick update, Gaile gets to come home from her recent extended stay in the hospital….she is so excited to resume her daily activities in her own home. Thanks to all who sent cards, they really helped her through that rough time. If you haven’t donated yet, please consider doing it soon, we are working very hard to get her a vehicle she can ride in without having to rent one. That will change everything for her. Thanks for all your generosity and check back soon as I think we are going to have a couple of fund raising events this summer! Mickey

Just had some great fun with family and my lovely friend Susan Jackson who came for a visit and to see me for the first time since my accident. It was very heartwarming for all of us. Being so far away from my hometown, there are very few people who have actually come down for a visit, except for family, so it made this one extra special. I continue to navigate my way around the handicap lifestyle and all the complications that arise from it, but I am also getting very excited about the possibility of getting a vehicle. I am so grateful just being here, when I think of what could have been, so once again I say thanks for all the prayers and love that has come my way and thanks for your continued love and support!
