Supporting Julie Post-Transplant!

In February 2014, Julie, my mom, her life was turned upside down when she was told that she had end-stage liver disease and that she needed a liver transplant. The year for her was very tough as her condition worsened and she was placed on the liver transplant waiting list. She never imagined that at sixty-two years of age, she would be faced with the overwhelming cost of a life-saving transplant.

On August 22, my mom went to MUSC for a check-up at the transplant clinic. What seemed to be a very normal visit, turned out to be a very concerning one. The labs she had an hour before showed her liver function numbers to be dangerously high. My mom and I just looked at each other. We knew what this most likely meant.

The doctor was very frank with us. He did say there was a good possibility she was in liver rejection. We just cringed. We knew, however, we could not give up.

Since that day, my mom has been having labs weekly. Her liver numbers have come down, but not to the level they need to be. The doctor is now talking of doing a biopsy to help confirm the possibility of rejection.

I will keep everyone updated as much as I can. Please pray for my mom.

Please take a moment to read the section, "About Julie." I have updated it to reflect the new year and again ask for your help and consider once again donating. It will explain why.

However, I will post it here for those that would like to keep reading:

Supporting Julie Post-Transplant!

In February 2014, when Julie, my mom's life was turned upside down when she was told that she had end-stage liver disease and that she needed a liver transplant, the year for her was very tough as her condition worsened and she was placed on the liver transplant waiting list. She never imagined that at sixty-two years of age, she would be faced with the overwhelming cost of a life-saving transplant.

When she got the call from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina on March 13, 2015 at 3:30 in the morning, her life changed. By 9:00 that night, her donor liver was in place and she was in recovery. With her life changed forever, the healing process began.

Nine months has now past and with the onset of 2016 near, January means insurance co-payments on her immunosuppressant medications. She is on two different types; Cellcept and Prograf. These medications are very expensive for a 30-day supply. Even with insurance, a liver transplant, while life-saving, can be financially draining. With co-pays and these two post-transplant medications that will cost more than $1,000 a month each, Julie will need to take these medications for the rest of her life.

To help with the financial burden of Mom's uninsured expenses, this same fundraising campaign in her honor, is still active with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the South-Atlantic Liver Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider making a contribution too continue to support Julie.

Working together, you that have given previously, have seen Julie's future get brighter. My father and I greatly appreciate the donations each of you have given to my mother's fundraising campaign. We again ask for your consideration in donating for her continued health.

Thank you for your prayers, support and generosity.

With grateful respect,

Lamar Hewett, Julie's son
