Stephanie G. Altman, a special education teacher at Roslyn High School has spent much of her adult life helping children with disabilities. Now suffering from her own serious disability, a massive stroke that left her paralyzed and unable to speak, she’s the one who NOW needs help. For the past two years, Stephanie has tirelessly undergone rehabilitation and physical therapy in Nassau County and New York City. Despite some modest improvements, she still struggles to walk and to speak. Remarkably, however, her resolve to regain an independent existence remains steadfast.
Stephanie’s husband, Frank, has been by her side for the past 48 years and sticks even closer today. He drives her to therapy every day, reads to her, sings to her and cares for her every need. Stephanie now needs more intensive and costly speech and physical therapies, which is only offered at a few out of state locations. The couple and their family have exhausted everything they have; physically, emotionally, and especially financially. To date, where governmental aid has lacked, Frank and Stephanie’s family have struggled to pick up the tab. For a while, Frank was paying out of pocket for everyday expenses to include food, home-aides, etc. However, after running a store and taking care of his wife, Frank was forced to close his business.
