On February 23, 2014 everything changed in an instant when he was assaulted trying to break up a fight. He was critically injured and life-flighted to a nearby trauma one hospital with a fractured skull and severe traumatic brain injury. His marathon to recovery had commenced. The first nine months were filled with more downs than ups as he fought through a coma, blood clot, infections, countless surgeries, and trips back and forth from the hospital to Magee Rehab where he was able to eventually start an upward trend to recovery.
A couple days before Thanksgiving 2014 he came home to continue his rehabilitation. Over the course of the last five years, Jackie has continued to overcome numerous obstacles, including a coma, blood clot, multiple infections, and countless surgeries. His rehab included relearning how to walk, talk, and eat. Six months of his recovery was spent at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia with an additional year spent as an outpatient at Penn State Hershey Outpatient Rehabilitation Hospital.
Today, Jackie celebrates the tremendous successes made throughout his journey as he continues his long road to recovery. He is again enrolled at Bloomsburg University, where he is currently completing three classes in pursuit of a degree in Mass Communications.
Each day brings hope for continued recovery and gets Jackie closer to his goal of independent walking and eventually a return to college. Jackie feels fortunate to be alive and thanks God and everyone for their prayers and support.
Jackie, along with his family and friends, has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. I have been following your blog since day 1. This has been such an emotional rollercoaster to say the least. I am in awe of your perseverance and determination. My Sunday school class has been praying and will continue to. Please know that you are a miracle and have so many people praying for your recovery that it will come, don't give up.

I just read the interview in the Patriot News and I am sitting here with tears in my eyes and a heavy heart of what Jackie has gone thru and the strength he is showing to recover. It's sad what our society has come to and that many young adults do not have compassion or sense of what is right and wrong. My prayers to the entire family and work family who has helped in this time of need.
