Janice Castroreed has Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) due to congenital medical problems and received a donor kidney from one of her brothers, Todd Castro, 17+ years ago. However; long-term use of anti-rejection medications have caused toxicity to her kidney; resulting in Janice’s current condition of stage 4 renal failure. Consequently, Janice is in need of a second transplant and is seeking a kidney from a living donor. The wait for a deceased donor can be 5+ years, and kidneys from living donors can last twice as long as one from a deceased donor.
Janice has been on the national kidney waiting list since November of 2010, and her husband, Dan, has offered to be a donor. Unfortunately, after completing his medical work-up and compatibility tests, Dan cannot be a direct donor to Janice. However, remaining hopeful for a living donor, Janice and Dan have opted to particpate in a new program at her transplant center, Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, WA.
Virginia Mason has recently joined the Alliance For Paired Donation (APD), which is a nationwide organizaiton that helps connect incompatible kidney recipient/ donors with other incompatible pairs, potentially leading to a successful match for a “paired exchange.” Meanwhile, Janice and her family remain vigilant in their search for a compatible living donor.
All individuals in good health, i.e. no uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, etc. are able to donate. If you are interested in inquiring about being a potential donor for Janice, please call her transplant coordinator, Mary Mason, at Virginia Mason Medical Center at 1-800-354-9527 ext. 11201. Please be assured that all inquiries are confidential. To learn more about the prevention, detection, and treatment of CKD and Living Organ Donation, please visit www.kidney.org
Janice and Dan’s family and friends are working diligently to raise money to pay for uninsured medical expenses associated with transplantation. Janice has chosen to fundraise with HelpHOPELive in part because HelpHOPELive assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for donors. Donors can be sure that funds donated will be used only to pay or reimburse medically-related expenses. For more information, please contact HelpHOPELive at 800.642.8399.
