In 2010, I was diagnosed with emphysema and COPD. At the time, my breathing capacity was just 36% and it has gone down since then. The doctor who treated me gave me no hope for the future, saying that operating on me would be terminal. But in June, 2014, when I was hospitalized for pneumonia, I met Dr. Peters, a pulmonologist who assured me that I was a good candidate for a life-saving lung transplant!
I’m married and I have three grown kids. For 25 years I worked in building maintenance in the Cheatham County school system. These days, I spend as much time as I can at the Ashland City Senior Center where I teach computer classes and give individual technology assistance. I’m also involved in my church and other community organizations. But unfortunately, relying on oxygen and being constantly out of breath has caused me to cut back on my volunteer work.
It’s never easy to ask for help, especially when you’re the one who wants to be helping others. Although my medical insurance will cover most of the transplant surgery, I am facing other expenses which include travel and several months of housing near the hospital in Nashville, clinic visits, rehab and anti-rejection medications that will cost thousands of dollars.
I have chosen to fundraise with HelpHOPELive in part because HelpHOPELive assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for donors. Donors can be sure that funds donated will be used only to pay or reimburse medically-related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Donate Now button.

CONGRATULATIONS are in order for Jeff, who finally received the gift-of-life through a lifesaving double lung transplant on September 22nd at Vanderbilt University Hospital. Jeff is doing very well and recovering each and every day. He is now out of ICU and working hard at pulmonary rehab to acclimate to his new lungs and heal from his transplant surgery.Post-transplant medications to halt rejection, medical bills, post-transplant testing fees, lodging, and living expenses are quickly adding up. More than ever, Jeff needs your financial support during this critical time of his life. Please consider a donation to help defray the out-of-pocket expenses for Jeff. Thank you ahead of time for your thoughts, prayers and support for Jeff during his lung transplant journey.
