Patrice Penny-Henderson’s entire life changed drastically August of 2008 when she was diagnosed with end stages renal failure. After many procedures, batteries of tests, and several misdiagnoses, it was determined that a rare blood disorder is the cause. Currently she is on dialysis three days each week and is waiting for a life-saving kidney transplant.
Patrice is a loving wife, mother, grandmother and good friend to many. She’s a graduate of BTW High School of Tulsa, Ok Class of ’77, the University of Ok Class of 1981, Graduate Studies and post Graduate Studies at Indiana Wesleyan University. You may know her as Ms. Penny or Ms. Penny-Henderson through her many roles over the course of 20 years with Elkhart Community Schools, with most of her tenure spent as a music teacher. She also served as an Adjunct professor at Goshen College for many years. Her ability to inspire students through music has rarely been surpassed. She has also served the Elkhart community through faith-based organizations and civic/community activities with the same energy and vigor. Her affiliations and service have included leadership and/or membership in Elkhart County NAACP, The Links, The Drifters, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., St. James and Olivet AME churches, and Agape Baptist Church. She is currently a member of Bethany Chapel SDA in Elkhart. The impact she has had on our love of music and her sustained influence in our lives is immeasurable and far spread.
After many years of helping others, Ms. Penny-Henderson needs your help; something that is very hard for her to ask. The costs of transplantation and treatments are very expensive. Even with Medicare coverage, the out-of-pocket expenses could easily exceed $20,000.00. Some of these are co-pays, deductibles, travel to and from the transplant center, relocation at the time of transplant and she will be on a life-time of anti-rejection medications.
To help with this financial burden a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the Great Lakes Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant related expenses only. Please consider a contribution. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Donate Now button.
On behalf of Patrice and her family, thank you for your kindness, generosity, support and prayers.
