My wife, Liz Prungel Casperite was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease 11 years ago and has been on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. We have great news! Liz received the ultimate gift of life, a living donor kidney transplant on September 17th.
Liz was truly humbled by all of the people who tested to try and be a living donor. Maria Weaver, a friend of a friend, was a match. Once she and Liz met, they became inseparable. The week before their transplant, they went to Washington DC to lobby Congress about the Living Donor Act of 2015, which aims to reduce impediments to living donors. Both surgeries went extremely well and Liz and Maria are already planning ways they can inspire more living donations. Liz is now able to look forward to a long future, spending quality time with friends and family, going back to work and becoming an active member of the community again.
As you can imagine, even with insurance a transplant is financially draining. We still have many expenses that must be paid out of pocket. Some of these expenses are co-pays, deductibles, lab fees, travel back and forth to Baltimore for follow-up visits, and Liz will be on a life-time of anti-rejection medications. In addition, Liz is required to purchase Medicare parts A and B for the next 3 years in order to insure that Maria, her living donor is protected for life against any transplant related complications. We still need your help and support.
A fundraising campaign in Liz’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Mid-Atlantic Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider a contribution. Just click on the Donate Now button on this page to make a donation.
On behalf of Liz, Wyeth and our families, thank you so much for your ongoing kindness, generosity, support and prayers. Keep an eye on the website for updates and future fundraisers.

We are starting the Dyeing for a Donor event to help raise funds for the Mid-Atlantic Kidney Transplant Fund. I made these one of a kind pieces with professional dyes as a gift to you for your charitable donation. These funds will help Maria while she recuperates from hernia surgery next month. We both thank you for your support.
23 lives connected by one kidney donation chain! Amazing! See the video: https://www.facebook.com/maria.weaver.37/posts/10211789791197644?pnref=story.unseen-section
Maria and I were so excited to be able to compete in the Transplant Games of America this summer. Cleveland is a wonderful city, and we felt so blessed to meet so many donors, recipients and donor families. We are already looking forward to competing again in 2018.
The transplant was a success! I was transplanted on September 17. Maria only had a bandaid over her laparoscopic incision, and able to go home after two nights. I was released today, and will remain in Baltimore for a few weeks to be monitored.
Due to a change in antibody levels there was a mismatch in our kidney swap, and I will be now be receiving Maria's kidney. We are anxiously awaiting the results of our crossmatch, and will hopefully be in surgery tomorrow morning!

My living donor, Maria and I were entered into the paired kidney exchange. Matches have been found and we will be part of four kidney swaps on September 17th!
Just got my CT scan to be evaluated for a bilateral nephrectomy when I get my transplant. I would like to thank my friends at Salon Industry and Kim Sheller for hosting fundraisers for me!
