Liz was truly humbled by all of the people who tested to try and be a living donor. Maria Weaver, a friend of a friend, was a match. Once she and Liz met, they became inseparable. The week before their transplant, they went to Washington DC to lobby Congress about the Living Donor Act of 2015, which aims to reduce impediments to living donors. Both surgeries went extremely well and Liz and Maria are already planning ways they can inspire more living donations. Liz is now able to look forward to a long future, spending quality time with friends and family, going back to work and becoming an active member of the community again.

As you can imagine, even with insurance a transplant is financially draining. We still have many expenses that must be paid out of pocket. Some of these expenses are co-pays, deductibles, lab fees, travel back and forth to Baltimore for follow-up visits, and Liz will be on a life-time of anti-rejection medications. In addition, Liz is required to purchase Medicare parts A and B for the next 3 years in order to insure that Maria, her living donor is protected for life against any transplant related complications.
