My Mom, Barbara Caplan, has been fighting a serious, life-threatening disease called Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (or LAM for short) for the past 14 years. She has been on a waiting list for a donor match so she can receive a double lung transplant. Last Monday night, the call came that there was a possible donor in Baltimore. On Tuesday June 9th my Mom went into surgery and now we are happy to report that she is the recipient of one new donor lung.
Barbie-doll, Bobbi, Babbs, Gigi to Zoe, Izzy, Lindsey, Noa and Caden, daughter of amazing Tedda, wife to Stan-the-man, Mommy to me and Scott – has managed to hide her disease for many years. As is the case with many loving, protective parents, my Mom and Dad don’t like to tell any of us things that would make us worry – at least that’s what they tell me when I find out important information after the fact. Even though Mom has been on oxygen 24/7 for the past two years, her life has been completely affected because even with oxygen she had such difficulty breathing.
I know friends and family will be wondering how they can help as Mom is loved and adored by so many people. Although medical insurance will pay for many of the medical expenses, it won’t cover all that is needed. There are the temporary relocation expenses (both her and my Father have stayed in Baltimore during her surgery and recovery period), numerous anti-rejection medications she will need to take for the rest of her life, and other expenses that we are not yet aware of. Transplants are life-saving, but financially draining, even with insurance. We need your help!
To assist with the financial burden of Barbara Caplan’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Mid-Atlantic Lung Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please, consider a contribution.

Thank you so much for your support and generosity. Keep an eye on Mom’s campaign page. We will be planning some fundraising events soon and posting updates regularly.
With sincere gratitude,
Elissa – Proud and lucky daughter!!!

Mom came home on Thursday, June 18th and is doing really well!
We are all beyond grateful for the love, support, prayers, well wishes, the amazing doctors, nurses & staff at John’s Hopkins… the air we breathe!!!
She has not needed oxygen since waking up from surgery. My mom’s strength and bravery I witnessed over the past 2 weeks has amazed me. She was up and walking 24 hours after the surgery! This has definitely been the most difficult and emotional experience our family has ever gone through.
