An almost fatal car accident sent her to the Medical Center of VA (MCV) with broken ribs, a punctured lung, minor head injury and a broken back. Her spinal cord was smashed at the T-10 level and the doctors gave her a “complete” diagnosis and she was told she would never walk again. Keeping her hope in God, she knew there had to be more out there.
Stephanie found an exercise-based, non-traditional recovery center in San Diego and she packed up her life and headed west. After working and working out at this center for a year, God led her to Pressing On in San Antonio, TX to continue her fight to walk. She traveled to Lima Peru in 4/08 for stem cell injections. Since returning she has made voluntary movements with her legs and her strength continues to grow stronger.
In June 07, she graduated (as a fulltime online student) summa cum laude (top 1% of class) from Strayer University in Richmond, VA, w/ her Bachelor’s in Business Managment. While fighting to improve her mobility, Steph is determined to do anything she can to help others with SCIs & other physical disabilities adapt to life on wheels, get access to adequate exercise/therapies & as always, to smile & laugh as much as possible.
She is the current Ms Wheelchair Virginia 2012 and will compete for Ms Wheelchair America in Aug 2012. Visit www.princessonwheels.com for more about Steph.
Stephanie has chosen to fundraise with HelpHOPELive Catastrophic Injury Fund in part because HelpHOPELive provides both tax-deductibility and fiscal accountability to her contributors. Contributors can be sure that funds contributed will be used only to pay or reimburse medically-related expenses.
