As you may already know on Nov. 29, 2014, our son and brother, Kyle Craig, suffered a life-changing spinal cord injury as a result of a devastating fall from his deck at his home in D.C., which occurred shortly after Kyle was mugged on his way home from work. He currently is in the National Rehab Hospital where he receives intensive rehab therapy. When discharged from NRH, we plan to bring him to Pittsburgh to UPMC Mercy Hospital to be closer to family to continue his rehabilitation.
Kyle is quadriplegia, paralyzed from his chest down with limited use of his arms. He faces a very long road of recovery ahead of him. Yet, through this horrendous ordeal he has maintained his wonderful sense of humor and a strong determination to move forward with a goal to get as independent as possible in this ‘new normal’ condition.
The expenses of a spinal cord injury are astronomical. Even with insurance, there are many costs that are not covered. Some of these are home modifications, a handicap accessible vehicle, adaptive equipment, additional rehabilitative therapy, monthly medical supplies, home health care, and much more. The CDC estimates that an individual living with a spinal cord injury will have between $500,000 and $3 million dollars in lifetime out-of-pocket expenses.
To help with the financial burden of Kyle’s uninsured expenses a fundraising campaign in his honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the Mid-Atlantic Catastrophic Injury Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for injury-related expenses only. We have a fundraising goal of $200,000. Please consider a contribution. Click on the Give button on this page to make a donation.
Kyle is injured, but his spirit, dreams, and potential are alive and well. Your thoughts, prayers, and kindness have meant more than words can express. Knowing that he is not alone on this path brings great comfort to Kyle and our family. Please share Kyle’s story and his journey so far, through Facebook and other social media networks. (The details of what led to this accident are chronicled on the website: www.prayersforkyle.com under the tab ‘About Kyle’).
On behalf of Kyle and our family, thank you for your kindness, generosity, support and prayers.

Kyle and his parents, Sue and Jim, moved into their new handicap accessible house on June 23, 2017. New cell number is: 724-814-1393 (Jim) and email: jnscraig78@gmail.com
If interested, Kyle's sister, Kate, now writes a monthly update on his current status. Her last update occurred on April 4th, and can be read at: www.prayersforkyle.com.
It has been awhile since we gave an update on Kyle. Life is busy as we adjust our time and schedules! In October Kyle was chosen (one of 40 in the western hemisphere) to participate in a clinical research study, resulted in limiting OT/PT for a month. We quickly realized how important therapy is to regaining more mobility. We are also learning that recovery from a spinal cord injury is akin to 3 steps forward and 2 steps backwards.
In November Kyle got his own Quantum power chair made specifically for him. Up until then he had been using loaners. After 5 months of insurance denials, his specially built shower chair is to arrive today -- No more bird baths in bed for Kyle! While he is not yet ready for one, this week he was 'fitted' for a power assist wheel chair. Since insurance will only cover one chair, this one will be on us with an initial quote of $11 - 12,000.00. Thanks to your generosity this will be possible.
We were all able to celebrate Thanksgiving with our extended family, a highlight in November. Kyle's little nieces and nephews provide him much entertainment when they visit, and we're looking forward to celebrating Christmas together. This life changing event for Kyle (and the rest of his family) has reminded us time and time again of God's goodness to us. We thank all of you for your continued thoughts, prayers, visits, and financial support. We are blessed!
Our prayer for you is that you have an enjoyable Holiday Season!
The Craigs
Kyle celebrated a mile marker yesterday by ending the day in his new digs with his mom and dad at Longwood at Oakmont. We had a not so official hospital wristband cutting ceremony after spending 8 long months in several hospital settings. Today Kyle started receiving in home outpatient services. It's another routine but we know he will adjust quickly! We thank all of your support - financially, physically, and prayerfully! Our God is good all the time!
Jim Craig
After spending nearly six months in Medstar and the National Rehab Hospitals in DC, we brought Kyle to Pittsburgh to be closer to family and to continue his rehabilitation. From May 13 to June 26, Kyle lived at UPMC Seneca Place where he received great care and therapy. On June 26 he was admitted for a new inpatient stay at UPMC Mercy Hospital's specialized spinal cord injury unit, one of only 14 certified sci units in the nation.
We love you, Kyle, Jim, Sue, Antolines and Luchanskys! xoxo
