Growing up, Nils was very athletic and played on his high school varsity soccer team. He always had signs and symptoms of fatigue, and even needed to sit out some games. Shortly after high school, Nils decided to serve his country and join the US Army. During a routine physical, it was discovered he had a form of kidney disease resulting from high blood pressure.
Over the years, Nils received medical care yet the protein levels in his blood were elevated. Ten years passed and Nils’ condition unfortunately progressed, and was diagnosed with end-stage-renal disease. His glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is only 20%, and he must undergo dialysis treatments. Doctors have informed Nils that a kidney transplant is inevitable, and without this lifesaving surgery, Nils will lose the battle with his illness. His time will run out soon and a kidney transplant is his only hope for survival.
Transplants are lifesaving but very expensive. Co-pays and deductibles, medical appointments, travel and lodging fees, health insurance premiums, and donor expenses are quickly adding up for Nils and his family. Nils will also be required to take post-transplant anti-rejection medications that he will need for the rest of his life.
Nils is not only looking for financial assistance, but he is also in need of a living kidney donor to help him undergo a successful transplant. Unfortunately, after rounds of testing on his brother, a potential donor, it was determined that his blood sugar levels were too high, and Nils’ brother would likely develop diabetes. The surgery was cancelled and Nils is now looking for a new kidney donor. The wait can be 4 years minimum, and finding a living donor would be the best case scenario for Nils. He has been on dialysis for over 2 years, and is looking forward to finding a generous person willing to donate a kidney.
If you’d like to consider donating or have any questions, please reach out and contact the Transplant Coordinator, Sarah at 909-558-3636 ext 36802 for more information. With a blood type of “O” positive, Nils can only accept “O” positive or “O” negative blood types. If you have this type of blood and are interested in donating the gift of life to a wonderful person and human being, please contact Tamika as soon as possible.
Nils works very hard at his job, despite dialysis treatments, fatigue and side effects from his medical condition. He continues to work full-time, as the sole provider for his family, which includes a daughter with special needs. He maintains a positive outlook on life. He is one of the most loving, caring and giving people you will ever meet, and will go out of his way to help others. Now it is time to reach out and help Nils.
To help with the financial burden of his kidney transplant, a fundraising campaign in Nils’ honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southwest Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.
Thank you and God Bless everyone who is willing to help Nils get his life back.
