Our mother, Barbara Skinner suffers from Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). She received a life changing Kidney transplant surgery on Friday August 28, 2015 around 6:45AM. The donor was a deceased donor. The family of the 5yr old little boy that she received the kidney from must one day know the gratitude we feel to them for saving our mother’s life.
Barbara is a loving mother, fun grandmother of seven, and good friend to many. You may know her as a business associate, sales representative, and a member of your club, church choir, community, teacher, or CASA volunteer. Unfortunately, this past year her health has been affected by the reduced function of her kidneys making her unable to work or be as involved as she has always been. She looks forward to living a long life, returning to work and investing her life in helping others and her community.
Barbara is over joyed by the gift she received with her new Kidney. We are very happy with the outcome but still have a long road ahead. We are all committed to supporting her through this process.
Even though she is fortunate enough to have health insurance, there are still many expenses that must be paid out of pocket. Some of these are co-pays, deductibles, lab fees and her travel back and forth to the transplant center. In addition, she will be on a life-time of anti-rejection medications. This is where your help is needed.
To help with the financial burden of Barbara’s uninsured transplant related expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the South-Central Kidney Transplant Fund and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider a contribution.

On behalf of Mom and all of our families, thank you for your love, prayers, support and generosity.
I am now ten weeks post transplant. I have been recovering well and my new kidney is working like a champ. It has been a little more challenging to tolerate the anti rejection medications than I had expected, but I think it is getting better now. I feel so blessed to have the opportunity for a normal life when I get past these first few months. I love to be with people so much that it is hard to be isolated, but I am making it. My biweekly visits to the transplant clinic for blood work is almost the extent of my social life. I look forward to going back to work as soon as I am able.
I can hardly believe my transplant was four weeks ago today. I have been released by my transplant surgeon to be seen by Dr. Yang, my transplant nephrologist and my transplant team. My visits to the transplant center continue to be Monday and Thursday mornings for blood draws to make sure the anti-rejection drugs I am taking are keeping the kidney safe inside me. Overall, the team could not be more pleased with my progress and the apparent success of the transplant. I am trying to be patient with the affects of the medication and the time it takes to recover.
Mom received a kidney transplant on Aug 28, 2015. We cannot express the gratitude that we feel to the family of the deceased donor. We also have been truly blessed by the outpouring of support from so many. Continue to keep Mom in your prayers daily as we still have a long road ahead.
In a few hours Mom will receive a kidney transplant. The donor is a deceased donor. It is hard cause you want to thank the family for this. We may never know them or vice versa. We are very grateful that through this journey over the last year. Mom has been blessed with wonderful doctors and others along the way. We ask for prayers at this time. Thanks again for all the support.

As of now. We do not have a donor. Mom has been added to the deceased donor wait list too. Her last appointment her kidney function was at 8%. We have had two people tested so far. Neither one was a match. On a scale of 1-100...1 being easy to match and 100 being hard to match. Mom is at 86. So we know it is going to be a needle in the haystack to find a living or deceased donor that will match but we are hoping with the word spread. We may have someone test as a match. Thank you for everyone's support. My family and all my siblings appreciate your kind contribution and words.
Barbara was placed on the National Kidney Transplant list at the St. David's North Austin kidney transplant list on February 25,2015. She currently has a live donor who is being tested for health and compatibility. She is also in the process of applying to the Harris Methodist transplant program in Fort Worth. She has faced her battle with Polycystic Kidney Disease PKD for several years by trying to have a healthy lifestyle and keeping her blood pressure down. Over the last 12 months, her kidney function has dropped into near the level of needing dialysis. At that point, she applied to the transplant unit in Austin.
Your North Dakota family cheerleaders are cheering you on with love and prayers.
