Steve Hamilton is a 60-year-old man who is very ill. After years of struggling with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and emphysema he was so fortunate to receive a double lung transplant in 2011. After surgery, transplant patients must take anti-rejection medications for the rest of their lives. In Steve’s case those same medications that kept him from rejecting his new lung also took such an enormous toll on his kidney, that his doctors have told him he now needs a kidney transplant. Steve has just one kidney. We have been down this road before and know firsthand the cost of a transplant can be overwhelming.
Steve grew up in Portersville. He was a professional tree trimmer for the power companies for 30 years and for an owner-operated steel hauling business. Now Steve is limited to things he can do because of his illness. He is looking forward to a time when he feels healthy again and can enjoy life. He desperately needs this kidney transplant.
Transplants are lifesaving but financially draining. Even with insurance, Steve is facing very high expenses that include staying in housing closer to UPMC, travel, co-pays, lab fees, post-transplant medications and many doctors’ appointments.
To help with the financial burden of Steve’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in his honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the Mid-Atlantic Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only. Please, consider a contribution.

Thank you for your prayers, support and generosity. Please keep an eye on this campaign page because we will be planning some fundraising soon and posting regular updates.
With sincere gratitude,
Dorothy Hamilton (Steve’s wife) and Jeremy Hamilton (Steve’s son)

SADLY, STEVE'S HEALTH IS DETERIORATING. His kidney function is now down to 13%!! Steve is scheduled to have a port put in his arm so he can start dialysis treatments 3 days a week, hours at a time. He has been active on the kidney transplant waiting list for 1.5 years. We've been told it could take as long as 3 years! The medical bills continue to mount. We are planning fundraisers for the Fall. Please check back for the details.
