Ben Lucero is a 54 year old Pueblo resident who needs your support. After struggling with Congestive Heart Failure since 2007 Ben is now waiting for a new heart and under special care at the University of Colorado Hospital.
Ben grew up in Pueblo, Colorado and graduated from Centennial High School. In 1984 Ben welcomed his first child, Monica. Ben lived in Vail for 13 years as a painter and returned to Pueblo in 2003. In 2005 Ben met his wife Valerie, and soon welcomed Alesandra and Benjamin in 2007 and 2009. Ben is a great father who is always there for his family, and ready to be more active with his young children and only grandaughter Ava. Throughout Ben’s condition he has always remained upbeat and maintained a positive attitude. Together, Ben and his family are committed to seeing him through this transplant.
Transplants are lifesaving but financially draining. Even with insurance, Ben is facing very high expenses, post-transplant medication, co-pays, lab fees, and more.
To help with the financial burden of Ben’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in his honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the Midwest/West Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider a contribution.

Thank you for your kind thoughts, prayers, support and generosity. Keep an eye on this campaign page because we will be planning some fundraising events soon and posting updates regularly.
Gratefully,
Valerie Lucero, Ben’s Wife
Ben came home on August 6th. He was slow moving at first, dependent on the walker but he is making progress every day. He looks forward to next week when he is expected to be cleared to drive. Ben gets on the treadmill and walks every day at a slow pace but he always makes sure to get his steps in. For the first time he is on high blood pressure meds since his heart is working so hard. We are so thankful to the donor and the donor family. It's amazing to think that he has another heart beating inside him. I will post more updates as time allows. For now we are busy making family memories. :)
After surgery Ben had some bleeding so they had to take him back to the operating room to confirm if there were any tears or missed sutures. They were unable to find anything so the surgeon believed it was just the blood thinners and extra bleeding from surgery. They left him open to confirm. As of today 07.23.19 they are taking him back to close him up. It’s great news. The sooner he is closed the sooner he can get rid of the ventilator which is causing anxiety.
07/22/3019 Surgery is over! Ben has been given the GREATEST gift. He now has a new heart beating inside of him thanks to his donor in heaven. While one family was mourning the loss of their loved one they decide to donate life. The most selfless act that impacted more than one recipient.
There were times we didn’t think this day would ever come, and these last few weeks were very tough to say the least. It’s so amazing what goes into this process and all the people involved who help make this possible. Our family will be forever thankful. For those of you who don’t personally know my husband, I can tell you he is a fighter. Ben still has a long road to recovery but I have no doubt he will be back to his stubborn, caring, funny, smart ass, happy, loving self soon! Thank you everyone for your prayers! They mean more than you know! We have the best family and friends who have shown more support than we could ever hope for! It means the world! When God brings you TO it, he will also bring you THROUGH it!
07/21/2019: Ben got a match! On 07/20/2019 we got notice of a match. Dr. Said not to notify anyone until the surgeon confirms it’s a good heart. On 07/21/2019 at 4:30 PM Ben was taken to the OR. They did not begin the surgery until 7:30 to align with the timing of the new heart arriving. I will post updates after surgery.
07.19.19: Dr. says Ben is getting offers but the hearts are not good enough for Ben. He is being taken off one of the IV meds. Hopefully we have. Good offer soon!
07.17.19 Update: After many appointments and follow up visits Ben was hospitalized again on July 5th. He will be admitted until he receives a heart. On 07.17.19 Ben received a pump which helps with easing the work his heart has to do for pumping. He is unable to sit up, or turn on his side while the pump is in place. He is in pain but keeping positive that a compatible heart will come on time. The pump has also relieved lung pressure which will help after transplant. Ben is now status two and bed ridden until the call comes. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

We love you Lucero’s so much and pray God’s abundant blessings and healing over you all! “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
