Andy, a lifelong gymnast and athlete who performed with the Jesse White Tumblers and the Chicago Bulls Acrobatic Dunk Team, broke his neck in a freak mid-air tumbling collision on June 6. Unfortunately, insurance doesn’t pick up all costs, which can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars in just the first year. This is why we are asking for your help.
Andy was initially completely paralyzed below his neck, but because his spinal cord did not suffer a complete break, there is hope for progress as he recovers from the shock to the spinal cord. After surgery to reconstruct his C5 vertebra, Andy entered an intensive rehabilitation program at the world-renowned Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC). He has already regained significant movement of his arms and enough hand control to feed himself, operate his power wheelchair and iPhone, and perform other activities of daily living.
With incredible support from a large network of friends, family, and the phenomenal folks at RIC, Andy is managing to keep his spirits up. He is working very hard each day to develop his upper body strength and his leg functions, so he can get back to his job teaching gymnastics with the Chicago Park District. Andy’s personality and humor remain intact.
We know that the determination, discipline and drive that made him a successful athlete, along with access to the most up-to-date modern medical advances in spinal cord treatments, will enable him to reach his goals.
Andy’s insurance has covered much, but not all, of his hospitalization and rehabilitation program to date. However, once he’s sent home to continue the long process of rehabilitation as an outpatient, insurance will not pay for all the therapy, personal care assistance, and equipment he will need.
We have chosen to fundraise with HelpHOPELive in part because HelpHOPELive assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for donors. Donors can be sure that funds donated will be used only to pay or reimburse medically-related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Donate Now button.

Hey,
I don’t know if you will see this, it’s been a few years... I tried getting in touch with you but I wasn’t able to. I was so shocked and upset when I heard what happened, and I just really wish we could reconnect. I never got to really thank you for being there for me my first semester at landmark. I don’t know if I fully comprehended what a major role you played in helping me get myself together. It will always mean the world to me. Thank you for everything, and I hope you’re doing well. I’m sorry I fell out of touch.
Sending you good energy,
Abigail

Ace,
My love. I am so sorry to hear about this tragic news. I was hoping I would see you at Landmark's Sports Banquet yesterday evening. Mr. Stanley reached out to me to see if I would be willing to speak a few words. My heart literally fell out when I heard about you. Words can not describe the amazing person you are inside and out. I hope this message receives you well. Believe it or not I will be out to see you as soon as I can. Mikey has been looking for you. He is very concerned, but you take care of you right now. We all are with you every step of the way in spirit and cheering you along to full recovery. Latoya, Steff, Ryan, and many other Landmark College friends send their love your way. God bless you and keep you safe. Hugs to your mother. My family sends their love. Whenever you get this message add my cell to your phone. Anything you need, I will do my best to support you in any way possible.
Respectfully,

Andy, your Mom is an incredible motivator to us all, so I can imagine what energy you bring to your recovery! My age 4 granddaughter is enrolled at CPD's Jesse White Center to start the journey to follow in your footsteps. She has dipped into her blue Hyde Park Bank Piggy Bank to add to our contribution toward your future success. Sending support with love.

Dear Andy,
I have not had the pleasure of meeting you and your Mom, but I am a member of your "extended" family by virtue of being a Good Neighbor. I believe with your spirit and determination you will make a full recovery. The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago is the best partner you could have in your ongoing endeavor.
All good wishes for courage and patience to you and your Mom.
