Shelly Olson is going to Mexico to receive a Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) to reset her immune system and STOP the progression of her Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This is a life-changing procedure that is very expensive and not covered by insurance and she needs the help of her community to make it happen.
Shelly is a 40-year-old loving mother of three children ages 18, 12, and 11. She has been married to her very supportive husband, Chad, for 11 years. Shelly was diagnosed with MS in February 2010. MS is a debilitating autoimmune disease that attacks the myelin sheath covering the nerves which causes them to misfire. This disease has changed the way Shelly lives her life. She is an avid lover of the outdoors, she spends much time volunteering for different organizations for her children and the community. MS affects the entire family and the things they are able to do together. By stopping the progression she will be able to continue being active in the activities her family enjoys so much, and hopefully return to doing some of the activities she has had to give up.
In 2016 Shelly and her mother, Jackie Baldwin, will travel to Puebla, Mexico for four to eight weeks for the transplant. Chad will remain home in order to take care of the two school-age children. The treatment is expensive and there are many other costs such as: travel and living expenses while in Mexico, lost wages, medications and continued medical care after returning home.
To help with the financial burden of Shelly Olson’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductible, and are held by HelpHOPELive in the North-Central Stem Cell Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please, consider a contribution and click the Donate Now button.
Thank you for your prayers, support, and generosity. Please keep checking this page as we are currently planning fundraising events. We will update the page regularly during fundraising, treatment, and recovery so everybody will be able to follow her progress.
Gratefully,
Jackie Baldwin, Shelly’s mom

June 20 is just around the corner. The money is sent, MRIs completed & sent, airline tickets purchased, passports in order, treatment upon returning home taken care of! I'm ready to go & rid my body of MS! Hola Mexico, Adios MS! My mom & I leave on June 17 and will return home on July 17. Due to my immune system being wiped out I will need to be very careful around people. Need to rest & get my system built back up so phone calls, emails & texts are appreciated. We will continue to update my Facebook HSCT page so stay tuned for updates while we are in Mexico. Again, THANK YOU to all the contributions & donations to make this a reality for me. God has certainly laid his hand upon me to get this done and he has touched your hearts to help! Thank you Jesus!
God is good! Shelly has been blessed by many over the holidays in contributions and words of encouragement. Thank you to all who have contributed and I pray that God continues to bless you also! We would not have been able to come this far without the love of our Lord and the love of all of you! Thank you seems like 2 small little words but they are huge & they come from our hearts! We are over 1/2 way there to the goal and with continued support we will be at goal by the time we depart June 19! Time is winding down! I can't wait for my daughter to get her life back without MS! What a blessing that will be!
The Cure MS-Team Shelly is so grateful for all of the contributions that have been coming in. We will be having another fundraiser on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 5-8 pm at Culver's in Clintonville. Culver's will donate a portion of total sales that evening between 5-8 pm to HelpHOPELive to be used towards Shelly's transplant. Click on the link under Fundraising Activities to see the details! We'll be there waiting on you! Hope to see you there.
It has been a roller coaster of week so far! On Sept. 28, I was offered a January 4, 2016 start date for treatment. I turned down that date because I could not be certain I would have the money by Nov. 4 when it needed to be sent. I thanked them for offering me an earlier date and told them it was just too soon financially. I received another email just a few minutes ago offering me a June 20, 2016 date. I quickly accepted! This works so much better for many reasons other than finances. My children will be out of school for the summer. I was worried about how they would be able to perform in school knowing I was so far away and who would help them with homework. Going in June also brings me home when it is not flu season. I will have 1-1/2 months for my new immune system to get a little stronger before the kids go back to school in all those germs. I have prayed so much about this. I just knew that the Lord would not lead me where I shouldn't be going.
Thank you to everybody for all the support and prayers! I am so humbled by the outpouring of contributions, support, and prayers. ~ Shelly
My great support team held a soup sale Sept. 19th at Fall Frenzy in Clintonville, WI. What a great day they had. Booyah and taco soup was sold, a organic meat raffle donated by Waseda Farms Market, raffle tickets sold for the Oct. 24th benefit, and paracord keychains made by my two youngest children. The weather was absolutely perfect and the people were fantastic! Thank you to all who have donated in any way! I had no idea how much support I would have with this campaign. The love and generosity has brought me to tears almost on a daily basis. May God bless each and every one of you! ~Shelly
After a 4 month wait, today I received the email that I will be receiving my HSCT in September 2016. I know that seems like a long wait, but it will come quick as we will be so busy fundraising. I was one of the lucky applicants that got on the waiting list fairly early. I applied April 26, 2015. Those who didn't get their application in until June or later are on waiting the waiting list 2017 and 2018 dates. The facility is trying to expand, but it takes time. It is possible that my date could be moved up even earlier so I am going to try by best to have everything ready ASAP so I am ready if they offer me an earlier date.
Good morning! I have had many questions asking, "What is HSCT?". HSCT is a stem cell transplant using the patients own, clean stem cells. Stem cells are collected from the patient, chemo erases the immune system, the clean MS free stem cells are reintroduced, and the immune system "reboots " and no longer knows MS.
We will be thinking of you as you set off on your journey! Godspeed:)
Melissa
Good luck, Shelly! As I mentioned on FaceBook, I made my donation in Joanna's memory. I hope you reach your goal and the procedure is successful. I will pray for you...
