Thema DeGraff, is a vibrant 6-year old from St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. She has a love for music, dogs, and is a special fan of strawberry smoothies.
On April 6, 2011 she became one of the victims of a tragic car incident where she sustained serious head trauma injury and had to be flown, by air ambulance, to St. Mary’s Children Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida.
She sustained a frontal skull fracture and right hemisphere brain damage to the corpus callosum of the brain. This damage has limited her presynaptic and postsynaptic neuron messaging system, suppressing her motor functions on the left side of her body. Her recovery is progressing very well and is hopeful through therapy which is underway.
To assist with Thema’s uninsured medical expenses and recovery therapies a fundraising campaign has been established with the HelpHOPELive. HelpHOPELive is a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for more than 28 years and the catastrophically injured community for more than 10 years. Thema’s family has chosen to fundraise with HelpHOPELive Catastrophic Injury Fund in part because HelpHOPELive provides both tax-deductibility and fiscal accountability to her contributors. Contributors can be sure that funds contributed will be used only to pay or reimburse medically-related expenses.
All contributions are administered by HelpHOPELive exclusively for injury related expenses. Contributions are deductible to the full extent of the law. To make a charitable contribution:

A message for Thema's Family. My husband & I have lived on St. Croix for many years. When I read about Thelma's terrible accident my heart immediately went back to the unforgettable day, over 40 years ago, when our own 6 month old daughter fell onto a cement sidewalk. The Dr. that came with us on the plane to Puerto Rico told us he would not becoming with us to the hosp. as he felt there was little hope she would live.
I just wanted for you to know this because she is now 44 years old, married & has 3 wonderful children! Today there is much more known about recovery from traumatic brain injuries then their was 44 years ago that we can look forward to ever better improvements to come.
Well, I just wanted you to know that you & Thema are in my heart today & will be forever. If you ever just want to talk or if I can be of any help, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
My e-mail is: [email protected]
With all my best wishes,
