August 13, 2015 is a day the Barber family will never forget. Their son and brother Joe, who was 18 at the time, suffered a life-changing spinal cord injury while diving into the water at the beach near their home on the Connecticut shore. Joe suffered a C-5 injury and is now paralyzed from the chest down. He has limited movement in his arms and is working every day to regain any movement.

Joe is the wonderful son of Pat and Meg Barber, grandson, brother, cousin and good friend to many. He is kind, gentle and has a generous spirit. Prior to the accident, Joe was an active high school student. He played just about every sport you can image, sang in his high school and church choir, was a certified lifeguard and was awarded Eagle Scout status the month before his accident. He was a member of the Daniel Hand High School football team and Cheshire Rugby Club.
