Michael Reyes, age 37, is awaiting the gift of life, a kidney transplant. He has been on dialysis since 2009, the same year he lost his mother to complications from dialysis. Michael is presently dual-listed at both UCLA Medical Center and UC San Diego Health. His only chance to return to good health is through a transplant. However, he need the help of his community to make this happen as the associated costs are overwhelming.
Michael was born and raised in Ventura County. He is currently attending Oxnard College with a major in Anthropology. He loves all things that have to do with cars, especially hot rods. As a dedicated family man, he keeps very busy with his two step-daughters, Lexi and Yessica. Last year, he became engaged to his fiancé, Onika. They have three dogs, Bruce, Sophie, and Ralphie. Michael’s family is the rock that motivates him each and every day. He also feels tremendous support from his trusted medical team, including Onika who helps keep him alive by putting him on the dialysis machine five days a week. Michael and his supporters are keeping faith that one day soon the call will come saying that he will receive his transplant.
As you can imagine, transplants are life-saving but extremely expensive. Funding this procedure is a monumental task as there will be many medical expenses not covered by insurance. This presents a challenge that Michael and his family cannot meet alone.
To help with the financial burden of Michael’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in his honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law, are held by Help Hope Live in the Southwest Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only.
