As you may know, Katie Mills, age 23, suffered a brain aneurysm the morning of September 4, 2015. She was airlifted to CMC where she remains in an ICU step-down unit. The aneurysm occurred at the base of her brain near the speech center. Katie was just starting her life as a young adult, and her life is forever changed. She is paralyzed on her right side, and has started to regain some of her speech and is able to write some. Her brain and body have a very long road ahead. Katie has started rehab and her doctors remain optimistic that they can help restore 80% of all her functions – but the exact timeframe is unknown.
Katie was due to start a new job at GoPro Motorplex in Mooresville on September 7th. She was very happy about the opportunity, and very excited about having full benefits as she did not have insurance. She will soon be applying for Medicaid. However, even if approved, Katie will still have many uninsured injury-related expenses such as: co-pays and deductibles rehab and therapy, durable equipment and home modifications – just to name a few. Right now, everything is very uncertain about Katie’s future and her needs and she will need a long term fundraising effort. We are now beginning Phase 1 to try and get some of her medical expenses and rehab covered. As we learn more about Katie’s prognosis for the future and her needs, we will keep you updated. Katie’s family remains hopeful that she will be able to return to a productive life in the community through the support of family and friends.
To help with the financial burden of Katie‘s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the South-Atlantic Catastrophic Injury Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for injury-related expenses only. Please consider a contribution today and click the DONATE NOW button.
Thank you so much for helping. Be sure to check Katie’s campaign page at the link above as we will be planning some fundraising events soon and posting updates regularly. If you’d like to volunteer please let us know!

Update from Alason 9/29/15:
Katie had a small setback today, she had two small brain bleeds beside the original major bleed. Shocking and earth shattering to hear, however the two blood vessels that bled are no longer active bleeds which is good news. The original bleed has decreased in size, also good news. No further damage was caused from the two bleeds today and she has not lost any progress she made in rehab. She has been moved back to the critical care ICU for monitoring, and will more than likely, God willing, be moved back to rehab within the next day or two. The CT scan in the morning will tell all. She is emotionally and physically exhausted, and wanting nothing more than to go home and continue her road to recovery. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers, for she has yet again jumped another hurdle by the grace of God.
We have set up a Bravelet page for Katie. $10 from every order will be donated directly to this campaign! Please share with your friends, these are great pieces to give as gifts or keep for yourself!! https://www.bravelets.com/bravepage/courage-4-katie
