At my 20-week ultrasound my husband and I learned that our son had the most severe form of Spina Bifida (SB) — myelomeningocele. This diagnosis likely meant life in a wheelchair, bladder and bowel dysfunction, hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain) and a host of other medical difficulties.

Within two weeks of the diagnosis we found ourselves at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to determine if the baby and I were candidates for fetal surgery that could greatly improve Andrew’s prognosis. Although initially approved for the surgery, I learned I was at risk for pre-term labor. The surgery was cancelled and I was placed on immediate bed rest. We packed up our little family, which included our son, Trey, and our cat, Jack, and moved to New Jersey to stay with my parents to be closer to CHOP and to get help with the care of Trey.

Andrew got his braces in July and took his first few steps with a push toy 2 days later. He is working on using his walker and doing great!

To all our family and friends. Andrew is now 9 months old and continues to amaze us! He is now sitting up, army crawling, saying mama and dada (he said mama first but now says dada much more….poor mama!) and gives lots of kisses. His favorite thing to do is to watch his big brother run around like a maniac and you could tell he just can’t wait to join in the chaos! I posted some new pictures for everyone’s enjoyment.

Dear Rich and Jen, Eileen has kept us up to date on Baby Andrew's progress and all of you have been in our prayers. What a blessing it is to see that beautiful smile on his face in the picture on this webpage. We are keeping all of you in our thoughts and prayers.

Andrew's sweet smile reminded me of his great grandfather's - John Lee. That remembrance made me smile since I loved my Uncle John dearly. Sending love to you all.
