My wife Sue Wilkin remembers very well the day she started dialysis. It was February 24th, 2012, her mother’s 82nd birthday. Her doctor at the time had given too high a dose of the medication lithium. She nearly died. Her kidneys failed. She was bedridden for three weeks in the hospital, lost her voice and had to learn how to walk again. Doctors have told us a kidney transplant is the only hope to extend her life. Transplantation is lifesaving but overwhelming.
Sue is from South Bend, Indiana, home of the Notre Dame fighting Irish. We are still die-hard fans even after moving to Bedford, VA in 2003. I’m originally from England. We were pen-pals and got married in Cambridge, England on April 22, 1978. You might know Sue’s friendly face from Bedford’s Food Lion. She worked there as a cashier for six years. Sue also takes great joy in dressing up as a clown and going to Oakwood Manor to cheer up the patients; she is a well-known visitor there. She also goes to water aerobics at the YMCA.
Sue is a devout born-again Christian as is her donor, Susan. It is their strong faith that brought them together. They met at a bible study at Bridges for Peace: John 15:13. Though this transplant is lifesaving, it is also financially draining. Even with Medicare coverage, Sue is facing very high expenses including post-transplant medications of up to $1200 per month, co-pays, lab fees and more.
To help with the financial burden of Sue’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the South-Atlantic Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please, consider an end-of-year tax deductible contribution.

Thank you for your prayers, support and generosity. Keep an eye on this HelpHOPELive support page because we will be planning some fundraising events soon and posting updates regularly.
With sincere gratitude,
