OVERVIEW
At 3 years old, Logan Reese woke in the night with balance and breathing issues. Just a few hours later, he was paralyzed from the shoulders down due to a rare spinal cord stroke.
THE PROBLEM
Logan’s family was immediately thrown into a world of hospital rooms, surgeries, 24/7 caregiving, specialized medical care, and rehab.
While navigating the emotional and medical challenges of this new reality, they faced an enormous financial burden.
Even with Medicaid benefits, in the first year after Logan’s injury, they spent $67,000 out of pocket on medical expenses and related costs.
THE SOLUTION/APPROACH
Seven months after their medical crisis began, Logan’s family found Help Hope Live and started fundraising.
Key costs to cover for a safer, healthier, and more mobile future for Logan included medical travel, specialized care, rehabilitation, and home modifications for wheelchair accessibility.
THE OUTCOME
Since they began fundraising, Logan’s family has been able to pursue intensive specialized therapy sessions that incorporate leading-edge technology, treadmills, pools, and more.
As a result, they’ve seen gradual improvements in Logan’s ability to improve his core and upper leg strength and even move his legs. “It was great to see him upright, especially with a smile on his face.”
In between his rehab sessions, Logan has enjoyed his first IMAX movie, singing along to his favorite songs, giving funny nicknames to rehab staff, and winter fun with his family (he loves the snow).
