The federal No Surprises Act took effect on January 1, 2022 to combat “surprise” medical bills, which arrive when a patient unknowingly receives care from an out-of-network provider while using an in-network medical facility. As PennLive reports, Pennsylvania residents may be able to find additional relief from the Pennsylvania Insurance Department.
The No Surprises Act includes protection for balance billing, or bills from medical providers to make up the difference between an insurance company’s coverage and the out-of-network price that a patient is expected to pay.
The Pennsylvania Insurance Department is publicizing the protections under the No Surprises Act and offering assistance to patients who believe they have received an incorrect bill.
Before paying a bill that arrived after January 1, PA patients can call 877-881-6388 or visit www.insurance.pa.gov/NoSurprises for assistance.
