A Help Hope Live Case Study with Thomas McClain
Part of the Midwest/West Transplant Fund
OVERVIEW
Before a lung disease diagnosis, Thomas McClain spent more than 3 decades serving his community as Chief of Police. He pledged his time to youth camp and character programs, DARE initiatives, local family assistance, and serving as the pastor of his local church.
THE PROBLEM
Tom’s ability to give back to his family and community was abruptly interrupted by a pulmonary fibrosis diagnosis and the need for a double lung transplant. Along with that urgent need came a financial burden: his family prepared to cover at least 3 months of medical relocation, full-time caregiving, and time off work, among other costs.
THE SOLUTION/APPROACH
Tom’s loving community turned to Help Hope Live to fundraise for the gift of life. In less than 1 month, the community raised over $20,500 for Help Hope Live in Tom’s honor, including raising over $13,000 in the first week.
THE OUTCOME
On April 8, 2026, Tom’s family shared that he had successfully received a double lung transplant. As he began his transplant recovery on April 9, Tom even shared a video expressing his thanks to his community of support from the hospital.
The Help Hope Live Touch
Help Hope Live provided one-on-one support to assist with Campaign Page customization, fundraiser planning, and successful outreach to Tom’s local community through press releases.
Tom’s loved ones were able to lean on Help Hope Live’s nonprofit status to ensure donors felt confident making tax-deductible donations in his honor before, during, and after his transplant took place.
“My initial despair has been replaced with gratitude and thankfulness.”
