We are currently fundraising for a used car/van which Kristy can drive the wheelchair into and lock into place without requiring her to transfer to another seat in the vehicle – and so that she can have the wheelchair with her when we leave the house. The vehicle [2005 Honda Element with a Side Ramp conversion] that we currently have a lead on is lower cost than most options at $11,000, and would allow her to sit in the front passenger area rather than toward the middle or back. (See Handicap Van Campaign Pictures below)
Kristy was diagnosed with ALS in December 2023 and in 6 months has lost her mobility. Her legs no longer function and her arms/hands are progressing quickly. Recently Kristy received her white wheelchair (pictured) and has named it the Roadrunner!
Kristina has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. Contributors can be sure donations will be used to pay or reimburse medical and related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Give button.

It has been a hectic couple of weeks and a hard few days. We have been moving apartment to the first floor. Always stressful but an emotionally painful move for Kristy for many reasons. We were blessed by your generosity and were able to get the car mentioned in the campaign. We will tell that story here soon. Kristy has progressed considerably in the last 2 weeks as well. More updates soon.
June 9 2924. Friends are coming to move us and our things to a ground floor apartment tomorrow. It’s over here. We have to move, again, but don’t want to. We made this tiny 3rd floor space our home. As we now move in with the ‘durable medical equipment’ downstairs and we cry, no we sob. Yet another loss. That’s what ALS is, loss after loss. We mourn losing our magical mourning and evening mountain 3rd floor view’s, leaving a nest where we hoped to be in for a long time. We know we have to move but it is ripping out our hearts.
June 6. Kristy started a new med, the second of 2 for ALS patients, last Saturday. It took us since January to get qualified and a grant so we could get it. We will see if it seems to slow down the progression. Today was a hard day. No strength.
May 31, 2024. Many have asked us us how we responded when we found out about Kristy's diagnosis. I wrote this song back in February/March and titled it "While We Can." As hr husband and primary caregiver I had to find a way to come to grips and process this life changing catastrophic illness. I hope it helps others to understand a little better how this horrid disease crashes in upon us.
May 30 2024. We received a "loaner" Hoyer or (body) lift today from our ALS closet. We are heading toward a new stage in this illness of this disease where she cannot transfer herself. We are not fully there yet thankfully, but we need to stay at least a step ahead to avoid emergencies.
May 23 2024. Kristy received her Power 3 wheelchair today last evening. Today she drove it downtown and back. This provides a new freedom and level of comfort as she spends most of her day now in a wheelchair. Transferring too many times a day just wears her out.

Sarah and I are happy to help. It's not a lot, but hopefully every bit counts. Good to see you two earlier today and I hope the new vehicle and apartment help things get a little easier at least for a while. Take care.
