Crystal Parker is a wife and a mother of two daughters. She suffers from IgA nephropathy and will need a kidney transplant to survive. As few of you know, Crystal is a 1986 graduate of East Gaston High School. Then in 1989, she received her Associate’s Degree in Accounting from Gaston College. By June of 2003, she went back to her home church, Myrtle United Methodist Church, in Gastonia, NC. At this time, she returned to college to become a legal secretary enabling her to obtain her current job as secretary to another church, First United Methodist Church, in Dallas, NC. Crystal loves to read and hopes to someday fulfill her dream of becoming a writer. No matter what path she chooses in life, her ultimate goal is to service others in any way possible.
Crystal has been dealing with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis for about 14 years. In 2011, she was diagnosed with IgA nephropathy, a chronic kidney disease. This disease has been taking its toll on Crystal quickly and her doctors at the University of North Carolina (UNC) determined she will ultimately need a kidney transplant. In order for this to happen, she had to undergo extensive testing to be placed on the waiting list. Through all of this, she has maintained her part-time job as a secretary, does bulletins for her church, takes care of her home and children. Her younger daughter goes to North Carolina State University. Her older daughter, Ashleigh, runs her own online business making it possible to help with her mom’s care. However this is a challenge they cannot face alone.
Transplantation is lifesaving but costly. Even with the best of insurances, there will be many transplant-related out-of-pocket expenses. To help with these, a fundraising campaign in Crystal’s honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the South-Atlantic Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only. I am at the top of the KIDNEY TRANSPLANT LIST as of this past week (Friday, October 4, 2019. I could be called in the next week or so. Please keep us in your prayers upon my trip to the UNC Women's Hospital in Chapel Hill.
This will be my first major surgery other than getting my gall bladder out in the last year. It is a scary process and I am overwhelmed by all of the emotions that I am feeling. Thank you for all of your help in fundraising these past 6 years. Wow! The time has sure flown by so fast.
Please don't let this stop you from donating to a worthy cause. This fundraising process is one way for me to pay for my medicines and many other medical issues.
Good morning, everyone. It has been a while since I have done an update for all of my followers and donators. So far, I am doing well.
My health is good and my dialysis treatments are going great. I have had a very rough year or so dealing with other issues. All in all, though, my health is the same. I am still on the KIDNEY TRANSPLANT LIST and trying to stay positive.
I have not been able to do as much fundraising as I would have liked this past year and I hope to have a fundraiser sometime in the near future.
Everything is going fine right now for me. I have been trying to take things one day at a time since I have my husband to take care of. He has been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease along with being out of work with foot issues.
All in all, my family and I will be coming up with some ideas for fundraisers throughout 2017. I would love to have input on fundraiser ideas from all of my family and friends.
At the end of October, I held my 1st Annual Hot Dog Sale Fundraiser at First United Methodist Church in Dallas, North Carolina. I had 300 hot dogs and we sold 80 hot dogs. As we progressed throughout the evening, we had several members from both churches that I deal with coming in and supporting my fundraising efforts. Along with the 80 hot dogs that were sold and a very beautiful prayer quilt given to me, we raised $900. This was a great start for the only fundraiser that I was able to have this year.
Next year, I am hoping for another year with at least two (2) fundraisers. Thanks, everyone, for all the help and love that you bring when we have these fundraisers. If you have an idea for one of my fundraisers in 2017, please don't hesitate to give me a call or email me.
God bless you all!
A couple of weeks ago, my pastor and friend, Rev. Kim Higgins, took on my next fundraiser for me. She came up with a chili cook-off fundraiser with donations from Morgan's shoes, Giorgio's in Cramerton, and several other donations from various places. We had a great turnout and I am blessed to have such a great person in my life. She is the best.
We raised about $850. That was great this will bring my total up to right under $10,000. I love you guys. Everyone who has touched my life in any way possible has been a true blessing. Thank you and God bless you all.
I just had a spaghetti dinner, book sale, and a raffle this past weekend. We brought in a total of $601.00 with the fundraiser. Thank you to those who volunteered their time, their talents, and their help in any way, shape, or form. This was a success and we had a great time doing it.
I gotta call the dentist to see about getting some teeth. But first, I gotta find the number. Hopefully, it will be soon.
In case most of you do not know, I have been on dialysis since August 22, 2013. Since then, a lot has happened.
Earlier this year, I have had to get my teeth pulled in sections. I am now toothless and praying I will get teeth sometime this year.
I would also like to say that between having two fundraisers on the same day (May 18), I did not know if I would make it through the weekend or not. It was fun, but very tiring getting one ready beforehand, while being a little nervous before speaking in front of a large group at my work church. Yes, I have two churches that are my life savers. They have helped me in many ways. They have also helped me raise money that I never thought that I would be able to raise on my own.
God bless First United Methodist Church and Myrtle United Methodist Church for being there for me, for working around my doctor appointments, and more. I love them both with all of my heart and soul.
Well, I have had all of my teeth pulled. But now I have to worry about if a inbedded tooth will have to be taken out. It feels like it is coming through. In that case, it will be even longer for me to be able to get some teeth.
It is hard trying to find things to eat that are not all liquid. I have to remember that my liquids are to be restricted, too.
Next week, I will be having two fundraisers in my honor. The first will be at my work place from 12:00 til 2:00 pm on Sunday, May 18. The other one will be on the same day, but from 4:00 pm til 7:00 pm. Wish us luck on them.
My mother and her church held a yard sale for me as a fundraiser this past October/November. They raised $280.00. Thank you, mom, and Profidence Presbyterian Church for supporting me in this.
My life has really changed by being centered around my revolving door of appointments here at FRESENIUS. I go to dialysis three days a wee: Tuesday, Thursday, & Saturday. These dialysis treatments have been going on since August 22, 2013.
I have taken things in stride about all of this and have cherished the new friends that I have made. Some are nurses and some are the patients that come in. I am having to get my teeth pulled in four different trips at the UNC Women's Hospital in February and March. Each trip will be two weeks apart so that I will have to to heal after each procedure.
If you would like to hear more about how things are going with me or what I am doing, check out my blog at www.crystalskidneydiseasejournal.blogspot.org.
This week, I went to the UNC Women's Hospital to see the dentist. This is one of the last steps for me to take before I can be approved to be put on the transplant waiting list. I have always dreaded going to the dentist (due to past visits), but this was by far the best visit that I have ever had in my life. The dentist was just everything that a dentist should be.
All in all, four appointments have been made in February and March for my teeth to be pulled. Oh boy! I can't wait. And I say this because God has plans for me and that is why he is making me into a new person with these little makeovers.
Good morning, everyone. As you all know, I have been doing dialysis treatments now for about three months. The treatments are gradually getting me to where I am not lying around on the couch all day long now. Things are going well with me right now, healthwise. I have met some wonderful nurses at my dialysis treatments, and I have to admit that I enjoy going to these treatments. The painful part is getting stuck with huge needles. Oh well, the sticking only takes a few seconds or so.
I will be doing another fundraiser sometime early in 2014. I have not decided on what the fundraiser will be yet, but I want it to be something that all of you will enjoy, too.
I hope everyone who reads this is having a good day so far. I would like to say that since my fundraiser, I have had my most of my hair shaved off. I love the way it is not on my neck any more. But mostly, I have had more people to come up and tell me that my hair looks so much better shorter. It makes me feel so good now.
All in all, these past couple of weeks have been a doozy for me. My feet have been hurting recently. I would get tingling sensations and the middle of the foot bottom would hurt really bad. So the doctor at dialysis prescribed me a medicine for neuropathy. Boy, everything seems to be coming my way. But hey, I see it as God getting me ready for a new me. How would you see it? With what I have been going through, I am doing good.
God bless each and every one of you who have been supporting me since I got sick. Love to you all.
Good afternoon, everyone. I am doing well with the dialysis treatments three times a week. My treatments are on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. I have met some interesting people while going through this process. But, the truth is that anyone who doesn't stay on the dialysis machines for the duration, they take 15 minutes off of their lives. What I can't see is why someone would accept that and risk their lives. Not me....
I have also been getting all of my tests done so that I can be put on the transplant list once everything is completed. The only things left are getting my teeth taken care of. Wish me luck on this. Just found out my first dentist appointment is on Monday, December 9.
I'm here for you in any way you need it Crystal!! We love you!!
