It’s finally the month of December and ‘tis the season of GIVING!

I am very excited about all the progress I have achieved with continuous physical therapy and vocational adaptive driving training. September Is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month. It Sure Has Been Rolling By ♿️

Bringing Awareness In Forefront For Those Who Have May Or May Not Be Aware Of How Critical Spinal Cord Injuries Are.

Many people like myself need lots of help and supportive assistance with living life with spinal cord injuries.

My main goal has to embrace my independence and mobility.

Focusing with getting an adaptive wheelchair accessible Braunability van that has a quality W.C. lift that will allow me to drive independently and safely from my Permobil F5 power wheelchair

with using specialize electronic mobility controls Aevit 2.0 system.

Here are 10 important facts about spinal cord injury (SCI), including medical costs, medical technology advancements, caregiving, and workplace inclusion:

1. **Prevalence and Causes of Spinal Cord Injuries**

- Approximately 17,900 new spinal cord injury cases are reported annually in the U.S., with causes ranging from motor vehicle accidents (38%), falls (32%), violence (14%), and sports injuries (8%) to medical or surgical incidents (4.6%).

- **Paraplegia** refers to paralysis of the lower body, affecting both legs and often parts of the trunk, while **tetraplegia (quadriplegia)** affects all four limbs.

2. **Cost of Spinal Cord Injuries**

- The **lifetime cost** of treating an individual with SCI can range from $1.2 million (incomplete paraplegia) to $5 million (complete high tetraplegia). Costs include hospitalization, rehabilitation, medical equipment, and caregiving.

- The **first-year cost** alone for a person with high tetraplegia can reach **$1.14 million**, and for paraplegia, it's around **$560,000**.

3. **Medical Treatment and Assistive Equipment Costs**

- Medical equipment like **wheelchairs, braces, and lifts** can be extremely expensive. A **basic manual wheelchair** costs around $1,000-$6,500, while a **power wheelchair** can range from $20,000 to over $35,000. Other assistive devices like **standing frames** and **exoskeletons** for mobility can cost **$80,000-$100,000** or more.

-Wheelchair accessible vehicles are a big part of mobility and can be very expensive.

Ranging $35,000-$100,000 with specialized driving controls.

- Ongoing expenses also include the cost of **medical supplies** (catheters, skin care products) and home modifications, which may cost tens of thousands of dollars.

4. **Breakthroughs in Medical Technology: Exoskeletons**

- **Exoskeletons** are wearable robotic devices that allow some individuals with spinal cord injuries to stand and walk. The **FDA-approved ReWalk and Ekso Bionics exoskeletons** are already in use and allow for increased mobility, improved mental health, and overall quality of life, though the cost remains high—up to **$100,000** per unit.

- Exoskeleton technology is continually evolving, with future iterations focusing on reducing costs and increasing accessibility.

5. **Neuro-Implant Technology**

- Companies like **Neuralink** and other neurotechnology firms are working on **brain-machine interfaces (BMIs)** to potentially restore motor function in people with spinal cord injuries. These implants use neural signals to control prosthetics or external devices and have shown promising results in early trials, such as enabling movement or controlling devices via thought.

- Studies on **spinal cord stimulation** have also shown promise in improving motor function for people with **incomplete spinal cord injuries**.

6. **Incomplete Spinal Cord Injuries**

- **Incomplete SCIs** occur when the spinal cord is only partially damaged, meaning the person retains some sensory or motor function below the level of injury. About **60% of spinal cord injuries** are incomplete, and individuals with these injuries often benefit most from rehabilitation and advanced therapies.

- People with incomplete SCIs may regain partial motor control, but often face lifelong mobility challenges, bladder/bowel dysfunction, and chronic pain.

7. **Family Life**

- Spinal cord injuries can significantly impact family dynamics often change dramatically, with many partners becoming primary caregivers, adding emotional and physical stress to relationships.

8. **Caregiving and Emotional Strain**

- Caregivers, often family members, provide daily assistance with activities such as bathing, dressing, and transportation. The burden of caregiving can lead to **emotional, physical, and financial stress**, as caregiving can be a full-time job.

- **Caregiving services** cost around **$20,000 to $50,000** annually, depending on the extent of the injury and level of care needed.

9. **Inclusion in the Workplace**

- **Workplace inclusion** for people with spinal cord injuries is critical but remains a challenge. While **ADA regulations** ensure equal opportunities and access to workplaces, people with SCI often face barriers such as inaccessible workspaces, lack of appropriate accommodations, and discrimination.

- With the right accommodations, including adjustable desks, modified equipment, and flexible work schedules, many people with SCI can remain or return to work, contributing meaningfully to society.

10. **Quality of Life and Mental Health**

- The psychological impact of SCI can be profound, with **up to 30% of survivors experiencing depression** due to loss of independence, changes in body function, and social isolation. However, support systems, peer mentorship, counseling, and technological aids (such as exoskeletons or robotic assistance) can greatly improve the quality of life for individuals with SCI.

- Mental health support is essential for both the individual with SCI and their family to cope with the emotional and practical aspects of living with the injury.

These facts show that spinal cord injury affects multiple aspects of a survivor’s life, from health and caregiving to employment and mental well-being. The cost of care is significant, but advances in medical technology and better workplace inclusion are improving the outlook for many! I feel that this journey has been very challenging and interesting while also giving me a purpose for life to help advocate for others facing the same.

I’m excited that I have been getting closer and closer to reaching my goal with “Drive For More Independence“ HelpHopeLive has been a great team of supporters with helping me with my campaign page. Between helping me with navigating with resources to help bring awareness for survival with spinal cord injuries and to help promote my journey with overcoming adversities and improving my ability to live life to the fullest! I find important to stay positive and keep on keeping on even when times are hard and days are difficult. I been striving to stay motivated and remain dedicated to sticking to my purpose in life with advocating and helping others in the community has been rewarding with inspiration to others!

To share some of my updates, my last post and the last few months I have been able to achieve to get my drivers license permit and been going to vocational adaptive driving school with Shrowmatt Rehabilitation Services. It has been over 16 years since I last drove legally so long ago, but then again it felt like it was almost yesterday. Undergoing specialized training to be able to use adaptive electronic hand controls to drive in a specialize wheelchair accessible van. With that, I have been able to figure out with what equipment works best for me by the vocational driving therapist instructor. It’s pretty amazing how technology is able to help people with disabilities and especially someone that has minimum to no fine motor hand control is able to drive with the proper hand controls that fit my customized needs. One thing I did learn is patience is definitely a virtue and driving is a privilege and should be taking very serious with all the other motorist on the road. Wow, that has always been something I was familiar with, but having not having to be the driver in many many years, what I once remember has came back very quick. But it will definitely be something I would have to get better and get used to just like anyone else would. With the last 35+ something hours it has definitely been a refresher and an exciting journey as well! However, I’m at the Next Step where I need to be able to afford and be able to purchase a van and have the funds for the costly expensive electric mobility control interface system called Aveit 2.0 is the system that I have been trained vigorously, how to use with practicing and becoming very comfortable with.

Now the price tag of a little over $45,000 for the unit just install in the van is a WOW of a price tag!!

Also finding the correct Braunability wheelchair ramp and also lowering the floor is another big modification expense of little $15k too I have to consider to include into the price of the build out after I purchase a new or used new van. Some of the minivans and full-size vans I have looked at our pretty pricey too. I have looked and learned to put the interface system into a vehicle that will accommodate me is right about $35k as well for just the vehicle alone. I wasn’t really totally prepared to be able to take on this hefty, but it needs to happen for the best. So I’ve been fundraising and working and saving money while also having to constantly put money into the old van I had that is over 20 something years old with over 200,000 miles has really had a hard life and is no longer reliable with the broken lift that I had been making work for almost 10+ years.

If you have ever wondered about how beneficial a fully modified wheelchair accessible van that has a W.C. lift fully customized with electric mobility hand controls so that a person can drive the vehicle from a power wheelchair. It’s definitely not a simple regular van that most people would see. So having one would definitely improve and make everyday mobility easier.

I have consulted with United Access and they have a few vehicles that would be a good fit for me. I know I will need a hefty down payment and have money for the adaptive electronic mobility hand controls that my insurance Medicare does not cover. I have a part-time job that is mostly can mission based so I am happy to try to make a living where I can afford this new chapter in my life. I’ve been so thankful for the community with their kind, donations and assistance with fundraiser events. Well, I will continue to stay focused on my drive from our independence. I wished you had achieved this goal sometime in the year of 2024. I’m getting closer and closer and it feels like I have a couple more months to be prepared for this big exciting purchase!

This is the time of the year we’re families and friends in the community to get together and get together, and wish each other a Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and look forward to bringing in the new year. I’m just thankful for another year to be here today and with fair to good health. I got to say this year was pretty interesting. Got to do some fun stuff, had a few eye-opener‘s, and it made me really think about life… and it made me think of how blessed I am to be here even though I did lose a few close ones this past year. I thought man time is too short and I ought to take a grasp and think of what would be something that I’ve been wanting to do and I haven’t quite done it yet… I do know driving again is a big goal and I am close, but not close enough to hitting my benchmark for my quota to get an adaptive accessible van. But I had to really think what was even a bigger goal, that was even more beneficial to those surrounding around me and those that I feel I champion the most and those should be my family, my friends, my fears, my acquaintances in the community that enjoy my positive feed like on social media, and just in my positive energy that I share with others on my good and also on my so good days in life. So with that I thought of my “WHY” My Life Purpose and what would a legacy be… what could I leave and be remembered as… I always wanted to write a book and I actually picked up doing some creative writing and pretty excited that I’m pretty close to finishing it up. I have a little bit more anything to do and then to go on a journey with the publishing. So as we go into the new year, be on the lookout, I will be giving some updates but I’ll be writing a book about.

I am certainly grateful for life in general and all the amazing experiences I’ve endure from all the daily adversities myself and others go through to see the brightness in every day!

I have always dreamed and visioned myself and others walking again with a bionic exoskeleton. The technologies have advanced and are now available to improve gait training with spinal cord injury rehabilitation. It’s proven through continuous trials that exoskeletons like the INDEGO will benefit safer walking therapy for people with neurological disabilities. Paraplegics and quadriplegics need this specialized adaptive aid to boost mobility in an upright stable position. This device is definitely a game changer. I’d like to see this technology combined with other therapies empower those who have hope of gaining more function with their legs to restore independence for a better quality of life. I would be blessed to have INDEGO help me move forward with walking again. I HOPE I can raise enough money to own a device that I can personally use regularly everyday and perhaps share a re-walking experience with other para and quadriplegics.

I’m always intrigued with seeing technologies that are taking place to improve spinal cord injury rehabilitation. It’s proven that the electrical stimulation or an E stem improves people with neurological disabilities. Studies and trials have proved that an epidural type stimulator will benefit paraplegics and quadriplegics. ONWARD ARC Therapy is definitely a game changer. I’d like to see this technology empower those who have hope of gaining more function of hands, bladder, bowel, legs to restore independence for a better quality of life.

This spring and summer has been fun and blessed! I am thankful for my health, I have energy to participate in different community events. Thankfully for my caregivers, friends, family and health care providers I have managed to keep my hopes and spirits up for new exciting experiences, I have done more then I expected and plan to keep on progressing with achieving my goals with progressing with therapy, working to achieve more resources to help myself and others with additional adaptive aids and equipment.

I like to see what the rest of this 2021 year brings us...Peace, Happiness, Strength, Wellness, Prosperity and Abundance of Opportunities!

It's been such a fast pace month, May has been cruising by. But time rolls fastly like Wheels of Evolution. It keeps evolving!

I had a crazy nightmare the other night. I woke up in the morning sweating and had the chills. I thought I was having some kind of complications but wasnt certain. It must of been the bigass T-Bone Holy Cow Steak I had for dinner that last night. Great dinner and movie turns to an early morning wake up from nightmare that still haunts me. I wish it would forever go away. Scary eventful time that has affected me for a lifetime.

I feel theres always a memory that always lives within me. May tha 14th be forever better and blessed! I cant believe its been 11 years since I was living in Austin Texas going to college, working and living life actively to the fullest with different inspirations, goals, wants and needs then I desire today. Life wasnt quite easy then and surely isnt easy now but I endure challenges moresome now then ever. I have been accustomed to pursuing overcoming adversities and practicing being patient and moresome accepting of new norm lifestyle with dependence on doctors, nurses, caregivers, medicines, therapies and support with aiding my adaptive independence for a quality life wheelchair and bed bounded. Frustrations, pain, agony and regrets makes just think and realize when times are really hard they are just long slow moving milestones of life with objectives in building more mental and physical strength, confidence, patience and purpose in life. As much as I rather have life different, I think I wouldn't want to have it any other way. I wouldn't have been able to experience the life I been living or been able to meet and help the people that I have had the pleasure of meeting.

Because this is what God's plan has been for me and I am living life at his pace. Surely am true blessed!

I am forever thankful for surviving this crazy tragic accident with my brother and friends. Things could be way better but certainly a whole worst. I'm glad I'm currently healthy and have much still to live for.

Im thankful for my friends, family to have stood beside me when standing was hard.

Walked beside me when I had to roll. Jumped and lifted me up when I fell or felt failed. If you truly knew how appreciative I am of many of you. I cant express how blessed I really am. I wish I knew and had the power to forever help you and motivate many others in this world.

During these hardsome chaotic times many families, businesses and organizations have experienced challenges, sacrifices and changes of the way we see and value our global health and economy. Covid-19 has not only effected and disrupted my lifestyle as well as many others fighting paralysis with social distancing and progressing recovery, rehabilitation and strengthening. I believe that we all practice staying safe, with proper habits of good hygiene, sanitizing our surroundings the spread of the CoronaVirus will soon come to an end. I pray for our world to come together and find a cure for this pandemic to save lives. Most of all I pray that we will continue to fight and advocate for spinal cord injury patients like myself To help find a cure for paralysis. As always I am truly blessed and I thankful for my support system, contributors, volunteers, and health care professionals. Stay safe, stay healthy, be strong and courageous! I'm excited that Spring is finally here! It's the season of new beginnings, crushing goals, working hard, enjoying fitness, sports, racing, boating, fishing, swimming, camping, skydiving, cookoffs, most of all enjoying the great warm outdoors with family and friends.

Meanwhile, I blessed to be healthy and energized to be strengthen my self at T.I.R.R. in Houston with great physical and occupational therapists. Working on gains toning my core, upper and lower extremities. I enjoy using the walking gait trainer Lokomat machine by (www.hocoma.com) and my favorite FES RT300 arm and leg cycle by (www.restorative-therapies.com) I hope to get one for my home one day so daily exercises would be convenient!

Because of my community of all the HELP and HOPE from my doctors, nurses, therapists, caregivers, family, friends, contributors, and sponsors I been blessed to LIVE

Thank you God for showing me the way and giving me life, embracing my faith, courage, belief and helping me identify my purpose in life to advocate for myself and others fighting with disabilities and spinal cord injuries.

GOALS:

I made a promise I will continue to stride to be the best I can be, continuing strengthen so I drive again.

Getting into eSports and iRacing with the IMSA and Forza 7 racing platform has been exciting!

Fundraising for my personal exoskeleton bionic legs made by (www.indego.com) has been an ongoing and exciting process.

Racing for a Spinal Cord Injury Cure is such a long and amazing journey!

I like to share my upmost appreciation for all of my support from HelpHopeLive and all of the wonderful friends, family, supporters, volunteers and donors that have been part of my journey for the past 10 years of my recovery.

I feel surviving another year of life is always a blessing, knowing how far I have came from my initial Spinal Cord Injury in May of 2009. Waking up each and everyday with hope for a cure for S.C.I. I steadily focus on making small steady improvements in maintaining a healthy balance fun lifestyle. I have fought my pain with pushing my faith, positive spirit and mindset to aid in striding to overcome adversities with my rehabilitation. I am not quite at the top of the mountain but I am 1 more step closer than I was.

The difference between last year 2019 and the upcoming 2020. Brings to mind are all the great memories and opportunities and wonderful people I have met and helped that I endure while leaving my 2019 joy to further my leaps of prosperity in making 2020 great year.

I encourage you all to set new goals to accomplish this year.

Wow I can't believe time has flown by so fast, Happy 10 year anniversary of rolling strong through recovery! Words can't express how blessed and thankful I am to be surviving here still today, Looking forward to celebrating another 10+ more years of life.

Today's a very special day to me and my family and friends. I celebrate another year of life with HELP from God , HOPE from you all, that I LIVE strengthen my life and others with Faith, Determination, Wisdom and Passion to fight for an extreme come back.

I have so much appreciation for those first responders, Drs, nurses, therapists, health care professionals, family, friends, caregivers, volunteers and generous contributors that have been there for me thick in thin for many years.

I'm hopeful that there will be cures for spinal cord injuries. I certainly Pray 2 Walk agian somday. Please help support my cause in raising awareness for S.C.I. research and recovery to help me with "Empowering Individuals' Independence with Disabilities to Maximize Recovery while Rolling to Walk Upright Again"

I just would like to show my appreciation to my nurses I have had and all of societies nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse assistants, nursing students. Theres more to nursing than just CPR and trips to ER and surgeries in the operation room. Theres a lot of tidiness to healthcare and carrying out doctor orders... It's being strong alert and prepared theres more responsibility to it like checking and recording vitals, administering meds, bandaging wounds, drawing blood, giving ivy's CPR in hospitals, home health and Dr. office clinic check ups. Its someone who cares and gots your back or hand when sometimes an advocate and friend when no one else is. These professionals have devoted thier time education and lifestyle to help others in medical need. I think health care professionals are HEROES you can't live without them as well as other healthcare professionals like caregivers, therapists, pharmacists, paramedics, along with dispatchers, and sought after first responders. Its important to know how valuable these people are. You never know when you or loved one will need one. Especially with healthcare on the rise. Good prefessionals are needed. Hope you are fortunate to get a good one that's quick diversely knowledgable and compassionate in making you feel safe and comfortable. I know personally I have encounters with great ones, fair ones and ones that just don't belong doing what they in the health field. One tip please show them respect and have some patience with them and help them help others. Thier jobs are not always easy flowing like some might think. Its rewarding

I like to share with all you my progress has been improving. My recovery has been a journey. Today marks my 7 year anniversary celebration of survival and recovery of life. May 14, 2009 was a tragic memory of my car accident. I feel so blessed tobe alive and healthy. Im so appreciative for all the great people, friends, family, sponsors and supporters that I have in my life today. Every bit has helped make my road to recovery a rewarding journey of improvement. I may not be where I want to be today, but I am always one step closer to getting there. I hope to see the advancement in today's future medicine and technology for a cure for spinal cord injury. There is a lot of advancements happening. I pray that one day soon that people with paralysis will be able to walk again. Thanks to progressing clinical trials and technologies like bionic exoskeleton walking devices, neuro brain and spinal implants along with stem cell research will make recovery and rehabilitation more promising. Meanwhile, waiting for more discoveries and advancments for the FDA and insurance to approve these technologies and treatments available to the masses feels like the only hold back. Im looking forward to the near future! Thank you for all your prayers and support. God Bless!

I am so blessed! There's not enough words to express how I feel everyday waking up knowing God has a plan for me. I know there are many challenges and achievements we all live for in life. I am just like each and every one of you we all have good days bad days. What makes us all unique is we have a choice what kind of day were going to have and how we're going to live it...
