COMMUNITY HELPING WOMAN REPLACE VAN LOST IN FLOOD
Katherine Younger Lost Her Wheelchair Van in a Flash Flood
MCFARLAND, Wis.—71-year-old Katherine Younger is used to navigating the challenges of life with multiple sclerosis. She’s been living with the diagnosis for over 40 years. But in July 2024, she faced an unexpected hurdle: her wheelchair van was washed away in a flash flood. Her community is coming together to help her fundraise for a replacement van through the trusted nonprofit Help Hope Live.
Katherine is a dynamic, fun-loving woman who is an accomplished choral conductor and composer with degrees in music education and the history of music. She’s an active and well-known community member, particularly for her work with the Michigan Women’s Music Festival.
Katherine loves singing, playing piano, teaching voice lessons, gardening, and decorating for the holidays. However, over the past 40 years, she has dealt with ongoing mobility challenges due to primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS).
She has experienced a steady decline in physical capabilities. Today, Katherine relies on assistance for personal care, bathing, mobility, and daily living activities while she contends with chronic pain and muscle spasms.
In July 2024, flash floods across her home area of Wisconsin left her without the wheelchair van she relies on to get to medical appointments and access her community. Katherine is now homebound until she can purchase a replacement van—a cost insurance doesn’t cover despite the medical necessity.
That’s why Katherine’s community has turned to the nonprofit Help Hope Live to start a fundraising campaign. Tax-deductible donations can be made at: https://helphopelive.org/campaign/24638/
Unlike a GoFundMe campaign, donations to Help Hope Live are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law, and all funds raised will be managed by the nonprofit to cover verified medical and related expenses. Help Hope Live verifies medical and financial need for every patient.
Help Hope Live is a national nonprofit that specializes in engaging communities in secure, tax-deductible fundraising campaigns for people who need a transplant or are affected by a catastrophic injury or illness. Since 1983, campaigns organized by Help Hope Live have raised over $188 million to pay patient expenses. ###
