Claudio's Story As many of you know, Claudio Arguello has been fighting a courageous battle with kidney failure for the past 14 months. Since January 2012, soon after his beloved father passed due to liver cancer and kidney failure, he was diagnosed with ESRF (End Stage Renal Failure). But, because of his passion for life and his family, Claudio has, since then, taken a proactive approach on the steps to improving his health. The power of dialysis is what has kept him moving forward, as he frequents ARA (American Renal Association) three times per week for four hour sessions. Although dialysis is what is keeping him alive and his treatments are going fairly well, he is, and has been for fourteen months now, unable to work. Claudio has been known to be the family financial provider through the course of his life, but because of his inability to work he has relied on Social Security and disability benefits, covering the basic living expenses, such as the mortgage and utility bills. The funds that he is receiving are very much appreciated by himself and his entire family. The cost of medical visits and dialysis treatments are currently covered through Medicare by 80 %. As it stands, coverage-wise, a transplant procedure will also be covered limited at 80%. Although Medicare will cover the bulk of his procedures, he will have many out-of-pocket expenses, such as: payments for hospital visits, clinics and costly anti-rejection medications Claudio will have to take for the rest of his life. Claudio and his family are forever grateful for the opportunity to fight for his life every day, thus was such exciting news when placed on the UNOS waiting list for a kidney transplant at both Tampa General Hospital and UM-Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. The gratitude for the life-saving hope he has been granted cannot be fully expressed through words, although the procedure comes with a monumental task of upcoming out-of-pocket financial expenses. This could be his life-saving chance and we cannot meet the costs alone. To help with some of these uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in Claudio's honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years.
