This December, we look forward to gifting a customized Flyers-themed adaptive bike to 11-year-old Cooper “Coop” Gaspero through our Every Child Deserves a Bike partnership with the Philadelphia Flyers Alumni Association.
“When you have a child that cognitively understands the world but physically cannot participate in it, it’s disheartening. Walking, running, playing, eating…everything is a fight.”
Coop is an identical triplet. After experiencing an in-utero stroke, Coop was born with both physical and mental challenges.
Today, he relies on a wheelchair for mobility and caregiving assistance for most tasks.
“Every day is a battle for him, but Cooper would love a chance to ride a bike like everyone else.”
While Coop can propel his own wheelchair and stand for about 15 seconds at a time, he and his family must work hard to keep up his activity levels as much as possible.
If Coop doesn’t receive regular therapy and stretches, his muscles begin to contract, making future motion even more challenging. That’s why an adaptive bike is a fantastic fit for this family.
“This bike helps propel his legs forward while giving him fun and happiness. The smile on this boy’s face when he saw he could go fast was nothing like I’ve ever seen.”
We are so grateful to the Flyers Alumni Association for making it possible for us to bring joy, motion, and hope within reach for local kids and young adults living with life-changing disabilities.
We know adaptive bikes can be a game-changer, improving outdoor access, community connection, and regular exercise that can help improve mobility, health, and independence. However, adaptive bikes often remain financially out of reach for families without help.
Thanks to the Flyers Alumni Association, together, we can bring a vision to life: Every Child Deserves a Bike.
Together, we’ve already brought more joy and motion into the lives of dozens of local kids and young adults.
Donate to this special program, learn why this exceptional partnership with the Flyers Alumni Association began, and see the joy for yourself as you read the stories of local families who have received beautiful adaptive bikes of their own:
