May is here, and that means it’s time to celebrate Mobility Awareness Month!
In this post, we’ll share some interesting statistics about mobility and disability and give you some options for further reading to join us in our celebrations.

Why celebrate Mobility Awareness Month?
Mobility can represent more than someone’s ability to walk, move independently, or complete tasks without assistance. From safe transportation and reliable care access to caregiving support and beyond, mobility is so much more than movement.
That’s why we take the opportunity to raise awareness, celebrate stories from the disability community, and highlight the financial challenges associated with mobility every May.
Mobility & Disability Statistics
Mobility Awareness Month is a time to recognize that people with mobility-impacting disabilities or diagnoses are a huge part of our society. As the CDC reports:
- 12.2% of American adults have a mobility-impacting disability.
- 1 in 4 American adults is living with a disability.
- 1 in 4 American adults with disabilities had an unmet health care need in 2023 due to the cost of care.
The High Cost of Mobility
Did you know that meeting fundamental mobility needs can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars out of pocket per year?
Though insurance may help with some of the costs associated with mobility, most individuals living with a disability will encounter costs that insurance will not cover.
That’s why our nonprofit exists: to help prevent medical care, mobility needs, and other essentials for living with a disability from becoming a financial burden.
