Amber’s Story
“It was a huge shock. My life turned upside down in 48 hours.”
Amber Campbell is a Fresno 42-year-old living with paralysis caused by the rare illness transverse myelitis since a 2014 medical procedure.
Prior to her diagnosis, Amber was independent, outgoing and vibrant, pursuing a career as a food inspector and constantly enjoying time with her friends, family, and pets following college at Prairie View A&M University.
Through dedicated rehabilitation, Amber was able to go from having no use of her arms, hands, or legs to regaining full strength in her arms and hands and partial movement in her legs—an incredible milestone for someone with her diagnosis.
Amber was able to transition to independent living and use an accessible vehicle to keep up her frequent medical appointments and rehab needs.
Behind her positivity and dedication lies a loving community that has helped to meet her critical out-of-pocket medical needs through the nonprofit Help Hope Live.
Insurance covers only a fraction of what Amber needs to heal, live, and thrive. That’s why she started her fundraising campaign at https://helphopelive.org/campaign/11361/
“I have become more compassionate towards people living with disabilities,” Amber explained. “My mindset has become stronger. I still find joy in everything I do. I know that without hope, there is no future.”
Amber told her story on the Help Hope Live blog in 2018—read her insights on life after paralysis at: https://helphopelive.org/amber-campbell/
