CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED TO HELP LOCAL WOMAN WITH CEREBRAL PALSY
Insurance Won’t Cover Accessible Van for 35-Year-Old Dominque Mayes
GULFPORT, Miss.—Living with cerebral palsy, 35-year-old Dominique Mayes is no stranger to overcoming challenges and adapting to the world around her. She’s now facing an obstacle she can’t conquer alone: the need for a wheelchair accessible van, a cost insurance won’t cover. A fundraising campaign with the nonprofit Help Hope Live has launched to help Dominique live a more mobile and independent life.
Tax-deductible donations can be made at: https://helphopelive.org/campaign/17431/
Dominique is a lifelong Gulfport resident who likes to shop, go to the movies, craft, and create in her free time. While she has upper body strength in her arms and shoulders, she does not have mobility in her lower body, so she is a full-time wheelchair user—an electric wheelchair at home, and a lighter manual wheelchair when she is out and about.
Dominque’s friends describe her as someone who “faces the world with strength, resilience, and a big heart.” To keep engaging meaningfully with her Gulfport community, she needs a reliable and safe way to get around.
For years, Dominique has had to rely on unreliable and sometimes unsafe transportation options to get to doctor’s appointments, connection and advocacy groups for the disability community, and special events. She has also been unable to work for multiple years due to these transportation barriers.
Insurance refuses to cover the cost of a wheelchair van, leaving Dominique on the hook for $20,000 out of pocket to stay mobile, healthy, connected, and employed.
That’s why a fundraising campaign has been launched with the national nonprofit Help Hope Live in Dominique’s honor. Donations can be made at: https://helphopelive.org/campaign/17431/
Unlike a GoFundMe campaign, donations to Help Hope Live are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law, and all funds raised will be administered by the nonprofit to cover verified medical and related expenses. Help Hope Live verifies medical and financial need for every patient.
Help Hope Live is a national nonprofit that specializes in engaging communities in secure, tax-deductible fundraising campaigns for people who need a transplant or are affected by a catastrophic injury or illness. Since 1983, campaigns organized by Help Hope Live have raised over $193 million to pay patient expenses, assisting more than 25,000 patient families. ###
