Erik’s Story
At 48 years old, Erik Walter lives a full and active life with his wife of 20 years, Kat, and his 3 children. He’s a former soccer player, a diehard Pittsburgh sports fan, and a home handyman who is renovating his family’s 130-year-old Victorian house.
Erik is also a heart disease warrior. He was diagnosed with a genetic heart defect in 2022 and received a mechanical heart called an LVAD in 2024.
Erik is now on the waiting list for a heart transplant. Most of his hobbies and pursuits have come to a halt as he experiences lack of energy, chronic pain, and sleeping problems. He had to stop working, and he must carry an 8-pound controller and battery pack at all times to power his mechanical heart.
A heart transplant will be a life-changing upgrade for Erik. He is currently on the waiting list, and the call could come at any time.
However, in order to make the gift of life possible, Erik and his family need to be able to cover the associated costs that insurance doesn’t fully cover. That includes a 3-month medical relocation after the transplant, which could easily top $8,000 on its own—not to mention co-pays, a lifetime of anti-rejection medications, and medical travel for follow-up appointments.
That’s why they turned to the trusted national nonprofit Help Hope Live to fundraise. Donations are tax deductible at: https://helphopelive.org/campaign/26917/
Fundraisers like the Beat Goes On Bash will give the community an opportunity to rally and give hope to Erik and family with all funds coming to Help Hope Live in his honor.
Donations to Help Hope Live are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law, and all funds raised will be administered by the nonprofit to cover verified medical and related expenses. Help Hope Live verifies medical and financial need for every patient.
