“If you don’t have the money, you don’t get an organ, you don’t get put on the list. That’s just how it works.”
Robert “Little Eagle” Smith is anticipating $260,000 in uncovered medical costs related to a heart transplant. He is fundraising with Help Hope Live for pre- and post-transplant essentials with help from his communities of support in Delaware and New Jersey.
The costs associated with his transplant are so extreme that his team has suggested considering a divorce from his wife, Cathy, to help qualify for additional medical aid.
“They make $32 a month too much to qualify for Medicaid, which would cover all the costs associated with the surgery.”
