MAY 18: LIFE-CHANGING BIKE SURPRISE DURING 5K IN RADNOR
Formerly Conjoined 9-Year-Old Twins Get Bikes from Nonprofit Help Hope Live
RADNOR, Pa.—On Sunday, May 18, at 10 a.m., 9-year-old twins Anias and Jadon McDonald of Collegeville will receive the surprise of a lifetime from a local nonprofit: matching adaptive bikes uniquely created to fit their disabilities. The formerly conjoined twins will receive their bikes from Help Hope Live during its annual Hope Travels 5K in Radnor, PA.
Anias and Jadon were born in 2015 conjoined at the cranium. They were separated in 2016 in one of the most challenging neurosurgery cases in history with the help of 40 doctors over 30 hours. While the separation was a success, the twins have had to live with unique disabilities that impact their mobility and health. “We face their challenges daily with grace and grit,” explained mom Nicole.
Anias uses a wheelchair for mobility, and both boys experience challenges with muscle weakness and mobility. The McDonald family has been working with the national medical fundraising nonprofit Help Hope Live for the past year, successfully raising the funds needed to purchase an accessible van.
Based on their unique mobility needs, neither boy can ride a traditional bike. Adaptive bikes are rarely covered by insurance despite their proven benefits for health, which leaves families like the McDonalds with a $5,000 out-of-pocket price tag per bike.
That’s where an extra-special surprise comes in on May 18.
Just before the start of the Hope Travels 5K fundraiser benefiting Help Hope Live, the nonprofit will present the boys with their brand-new customized adaptive bikes thanks to a generous grant from a local funder.
