Emma’s Story

Seven-year-old Emma was born with the genetic condition spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). She is unable to walk and relies on a motorized wheelchair to move around. Her parents call her “a sweet, sassy, smart, creative, and beautiful little girl.”

Home modifications are needed to enable Emma to live in her Greer home safely and comfortably—but insurance will not cover the cost.

First on the list is a bathroom renovation for accessibility. Next, entryway modifications to ensure Emma can safely maneuver in and out of the home.

Allison and Lee Nowell turned to the national nonprofit Help Hope Live in 2025 when they realized insurance wouldn’t begin to cover the expenses involved with Emma’s daily life and a healthy, safe future.

The community has rallied to raise over $17,500 so far.

Online donations and fundraisers like Tee It Up for Emma will make a direct and tangible difference in her family’s ability to encourage safety, specialized treatment, and smiles as Emma continues to grow and thrive.

At every step of Emma’s life, Allison and Lee have kept their community involved and informed through the Facebook page “Emma’s SMA Adventure.”

The page reveals how rich Emma’s life is despite her medical challenges. In addition to hospitalizations and specialized care, Emma can be seen enjoying tacos and treats, playing with her sister, going sledding, and dressing up for Halloween.

Donations to Help Hope Live are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law, and all funds raised will be administered by the nonprofit to cover verified medical and related expenses. Help Hope Live verifies medical and financial need for every patient.
